Siam Square hotel recommendation?

I'm in BKK for 2 days in August and want to stay within walking distance of Siam Square. Can anyone recommend a good hotel for around 1500/2000bht?

There's the Novotel directly in Siam Square with rates around what you are looking for.

Make sure you check one of the best som tum joints in Thailand on the other side of the street called Tum Noa.

Oh, another place would be the Princess Pathumwan also in Siam Square but closer to the MBK side. But, rates start around 3500 THB.

Som tum is a Northeastern Thai dish from the Isaan region. Basically, it's a spicy green papaya salad with various ingredients that can be added: peanuts, dried shrimp, etc. I'm actually not to fond of it and usually order something boring like sticky rice with some marinated pork or fried chicken wings.

But, in terms of local atmosphere, Tum Noa is excellent. The crowd will be completely local consisting of lots of students (Chulalongkorn University is situated behind Siam Square), flight attendants and young professionals from all over the city.

Damn, the cheapest room Novotel has is 3500bht.

Just looked - seems there are deals for 5000Baht or $140US ... which, considering the standard of the hotel, is pretty good.

also keep in mind the internet rates are usually a bit higher than just showing up...

I stayed at http://www.evergreenapartment.com/. They're serviced apartments. Not right by Siam Square but about a block or two from MBK and Siam Discovery.
