moving for cheap w/in the us?

so i guess the easiest answer when you're moving to a new city is to borrow a truck or suv from one of your friends or your family or something

unfortunately, that's not really an option

i'm not taking that much stuff - what i have would fit in a full-sive suv - but any sort of rental that could haul it costs mucho fucking dinero, even for just two days

we're talking like close to $500

i'd rather the clothing budget not take that kind of hit

are there innovative, cheaper alternatives i'm not thinking of?

or do you just have to pay up?

i just moved up from georgia to vermont

there were several options to consider

-put all my shit in a car and drive up

-sell my car, rent a u-haul (or any truck), drive up, and buy a new car

-hire a moving company

-ship stuff and fly up

the last option is probably the cheapest option (fedex ground or UPS)

you can actually choose when the packages are delivered.

costs extra but you can even choose a specific time frame

e.g. Monday between 8AM - noon

Think youselves lucky. Our moving bill is shaping up in the region of £7000 / $14000

( From UK --> France).

Sadly i think that you just have to take the hit. Package with FEDEX or UPS is probably possible, but i doubt it would be cheaper (certainly wouldn't be in the uk) and even then you have all the hassle of breakage and shit

^^

damn alt, that's serious $$$

herp - are you saying shipping and then flying would have been cheaper than hauling stuff in your own car?

my biggest concern is the mattress - i'd chuck it, ship the small stuff, and then fly, but replacing a decent mattress will set you back like $800

so i'm prob better off just biting the bullet on a truck rental...

research the rates of different u-haul type companies in your area. they will probably be wildly different. $ per mile is of course the most important figure.

i would not recommend shipping, as i just did that from the east coast to west coast cost $2k+ and they lost one of my boxes. you could investigate shipping freight.

how far are you moving? losing a mattress is really irritating - a $1k+ expenditure with no resale value.

I just moved 400 miles this week. I think the final bill will be around $800. but apparently you can deduct moving expenses from your taxes.but I would recommend renting a one-way truck from Budget. if you move in between Sunday & Thursday they will give you a 15% discount. I got one from Louisville to chicago & had I not gotten any of the extra stuff like a dolley & the insurance, it would have only been $300 + gas money. and that was for a 16 foot truck. sounds like you could go with a ten footer. and if you have a car, you can rent one of those tow-thingies to drag your car behind for like another $50. but the closer you wait until you move, the more expensive it gets. mine was also more expensive because I stayed a night at a hotel & hired a moving company to unload the truck.
