Best value in speakers?

Recommended Posts

I'm moving out of my old dorm and into a loft for my second year of college. I was hoping that I could get some good recommendations for speakers to put into my room. I don't know much about sound equipment, but I love listening to music. I dont have a ton of money to spend on them... I'm basically looking for a good value.

For computer speakers, these would be a good value ($200): http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16836136102

I've heard good things about a cheap bookshelf speaker from Best Buy by a brand called Insignia. Among the audio community, it's caused a little stir, though don't expect the end it all in speakers. However, you'd need an amp, so i'd recommend a Sonic Impact T-amp and a decent power supply.

T-amp ($30-40ish): http://www.thinkgeek.com/electronics/audio/6cd8/?cpg=froogle

Insignias (usually found on sale at stores for $50-60) http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7705307&type=product&id=1138085354138

As far as a power supply, you can probably get a wall wart at radioshack for $20-25.

I'm speaking in terms of a budget audiophile setup. You can check out more information at www.audioasylum.com or even www.head-fi.org/forums

i've got logitech z-5500

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16836121120

5.1 sound, THX, Dolby Digital Prologic II

they were just a little over $200 when I bought them well over a year ago (last Thanksgiving)... so I don't know what is up with the price hike. they are fucking LOUD though if you pair them up with a decent sound card

If your looking at computer speakers the aego M series from acoutsic energy are seen as superb. Otherwise hitting ebay will get you a cheap amp and a speaker set that will sound brilliant for chump change - or atleast under $200 probably- add some cabling and you'd be all set.

Here is the website for the aego's:http://www.acoustic-energy.co.uk/Product_range/Aego_series/Aego_M.asp

if you're on a budget, get second hand speakers. good quality ones have a LONG life and most stereophiles upgrade their equipment all the time so its easy to find good deals.

for budget stereophile speakers, check out the B&W DM303. Fantastic value for money, can be had for a few hundred (good used condition).

If you're looking for computer speakers with emphasis on value I'd recommend the logitech z-2300s because you can get a pair for $90 on this site. I remember they used to be $70 on this site before but they still have the lowest price for these speakers even though the price went up.
