Moving to Philly from aus

Philly's kind of the like the bastard step brother of New York. Everyone's got their own opinions on it but sometimes it's not so bad. For shopping you could try Walnut Street, or Old City which also has a lot of bars. There are some pretty good japanese places around here but it can depend on what your personal preferences are. Music you could check out The Trocadero or Theatre of Living Arts & The Electric Factory for bigger bands, places like The First Unitarian Church and North Star bar for smaller ones. Wtf are you moving to Philly for anyway.

I'll most probably be moving to Philly from the fabulous city of Melbourne, Australia, and I'm nervous as hell. I'm so worried that I'm not going to like Philly. There are only 6 entires here on superfuture for it! Are there any cool places to shop? Nice funky bars? Good coffee shops? Good quality Japanese food? Brunch places? Cool art galleries? Lively music scene? please tell me it isn't so bad....

philly is not for everyone, to be sure, but i can't imagine living anywhere else.

many "funky bars"-----this town loves to drink.

good coffee shops, yes! in great abundance. my favorite is old city coffee, they roast their beans at the reading terminal market location

good quality japanese food = check. iron chef japan, morimoto, has a restaurant here. better than the NYC morimoto at that.

brunch is an event in this city.

old city probably has the highest concentration of art galleries. every first friday of the month, they all open their doors and offer free wine and beer. the sidewalks are a crush of people.

and yes, philly is a music town. rich heritage as well as avante garde leanings.

look at r5 productions for a sampling

if you say more about what you are looking for, we could all be more helpful.

in the meantime, check out the two weeklies:

city paper

philadelphia weekly

but don't be put off by the status of the murder capital of the US

in my 10 years of living within city limits, i have managed to avoid it

some other phila resources:

phillyist

philly blog

philebrity myspace

philadelphia craigslist

^^^^^^^ Probably the best idea of a Philly starter kit you could get, denimdestroyed gave some great resources. Just to plug one of my favorite restaurants but if you enjoy mexican food head to La Lupe which is next to Geno's on 9th street. Amazing food and super cheap. Or if you're into Chinese food, check out Sang Kee which is also on 9th street almost at Vine Street. You could also check out the Philadelphia Zoo which was America's first zoo for something to do within the first month. Or maybe we'll have to do a SuFu Philly meetup and everyone gets to pick one place to go :D

for someone planning on moving to philly, this is COMPLETELY WRONG. Philly isn't the bastard step child to anyone. Philly is philly. I'm disappointed you even said that really. I'm sure everyone who spends time in this city would completely agree that Philadelphia plays second fiddle to no one.

Well I hadn't REALLY meant that, but then I guess I probably shouldn't have SAID it then either. Philly is distinctly itself and has never attempted to be any other city. I retract what I said.

Hahaha really? I was just in there last weekend and I usually go with my girlfriend who's asian but this time I didn't and they made me wait. It was only like 5 minutes but I still didn't believe them. The food is so good and so cheap though. Thinking about it, I might order some tonight or tomorrow. Ever notice how the bathroom is ALWAYS fucking wet? And how the urinal rubber mat is so old that it has curled and discolored?
