my fucking future

its my final two weeks of my education career. I am completely stoked I don't have to go to class and listen to 50-60 year old egocentric losers talk about market analyst, cluster bullshit and fake product launches. BUT, i'm also concerned of whether my next job would be running around making 5 cups of coffee for lazy marketing managers and photocopy their child pornography all day. I want to get in to fashion marketing/design/anything with the keywords marketing and fashion but I have no clue in fashion except for the mindless surfing on this forum looking at denim, fashion collections, trends and you people. any advice for a future product of society's educational program noob?

Im in the same boat, buddy. I gotta get my fuckin applications out. I dunno how to get your foot in the door. Make sure your CV cover letter lets them know that fashion is an industry in which you are genuinely interested, and not just because youre a superficial bastard.

Also, remember that its a loooot easier to go from a big company to a smaller one than small company to a big one. My limited knowledge of work life (3 internships) told me that small ones will give you more to do and might be more fulfilling, but larger ones are a garunteed paycheck and usually give you more to work with and more promotion opprotunities. No sacrifices to make on your part.

Errr... So yea. Spread that CV around boy, youre finally a man!

(ps, exploit every contact you got to get that CV on the top of the stack!)

i just had my 20 year old breakdown today of not having an internship and not knowing what the hell i'm gonna do.

fuck work life.

i'm just gonna go to the philippines and run a balut shop.

The key differentiator between friends I went to University with who have great jobs and those that have shitty jobs is internships. After a few years out of school this will of course be different, but in terms of their first jobs out of school, those who interned and networked (myself included) have all got excellent jobs as a result.

i'm graduating in may.

i have now 5 years of experience in publicity, starting with an internship

in senior year of high school through working as the manager of publicity

and marketing for a small business most recently.

my immediate plans involve working my new, non-career related part-time

job through the summer and for once, not overworking myself.

my advice to you is to get to know all the right people well, and all the wrong

people even better. network, attend industry events, hustle hustle hustle, suck

a few peens, and boom! happiness.

haha so uh...

thanks for making me feel worse.

p.s. england, do you need an apprentice or anything.

i hate t-shirt companies :)

i'll +rep ya when i get a chance.

He heh.

Sorry dude. :o

If it makes you feel better, one of my friends got an awesome job out of school and had never worked an internship in his life! But then, his dad was CEO of the company that hired him............shit.

Seriously though, you'll be fine. There are plenty of people doing great who never did internships. Just means you have to be stellar in interviews and attend as many recruiting functions as you can. Besides, you have Ms Will_i_am to work so you don't have to.

I wish I did that. I wish I could do that now.

I'm graduating law school in a month. I have a job lined up at a big firm, I worked there last summer and I really liked it, but as an intern, they don't have you work the real hours, its just for you to see how you like the firm...

I'll be working crazy hours, around 80 a week, basically for the rest of my life. and i really wish i could just take a year to work in a retail spot and hang out.

You dont necessarily have to be there your whole life. Go work for Levis, they seem to always need lawyers!

on the flip side, the law firms pay handsomely despite making it clear that they practically own you. my dad is always telling me about guys he knows that are making 150k+ right out of the gate for putting in crazy hours like that. so I guess this is what I'm getting myself into. A big part of me would like to travel for a year (aka live in japan) or so after college before heading to graduate school -- is this advisable or non, provided that I get accepted? can I put them on hold like that?

Bear in mind that almost everyone who comes out of marketing / pr wants to work in fashion / design / entertainment / etc...

Differentiate yourself from them. Get experience that will actually help you, i.e. corporate work experience. They will hire a more experienced marketer over someone who likes clothes...
