I need to do a paper on an online community and sufu was the place i picked, for this project i created a separate avatar from my other one and explored interactions online. 1. What are some of your early memories of sufu? Were people generally nice, or did they give you a tough time for being a noob?

I was looking for information on stores in nyc and stumbled across the forum. the first thing I remember was a discussion about chapelle show listing peoples favorite sketches. I dont think I ever got any hard time for being new.

2. Do you feel like your avatar/username is an extension of your offline personality? If yes, how so? If no, why not?

I dont think my username is, I mean its basically a character name I just decided to use somewhere quite a while ago and it sort of stuck. well the avatar is a picture of me actually, which I thought would be neat just because people have so many different pictures, this is the most basic original idea of it which very few actually use.

3. When you got your first rep points what was it for? Did you have to ask? Was it from someone you knew? What do you think people consider most when they give positive rep? In other words what drives you to give rep?

I dont remember, its not visible anymore but probably got it as a test when the whole system was generated. I think the whole rep thing is kind of funny, I wouldn't have imagined so much people in threads actually asking for it. but I doubt most are too serious about it. so probably some people give it around in hopes of recieving it back, personally I just like to sort of award good posts, nice pictures or whatever. I've played around with it though, theres a few guys I give rep everytime I can.

4. In terms of gender, how many users (in percent) would you approximate to be male or female? Do you think sufu attracts more heterosexual or homosexuals?

I think its about 98% male. I think sufu attracts all sexualities equally, I mean stereotypically homosexual men would be more into fashion, but I really couldn't say if that makes a difference or shows here

5. What interests you the most about sufu? What keeps you coming back?

the variety of people and style here is remarkable. this is not just a high fashion forum or streetwear forum, it actually compiles those. you'll find very streetwear oriented guys and on the other hand you have guys who definately know their stuff with designer fashion. at the same time very casual style is also appreciated, so its a pretty exceptional melting pot. I also find that there are a lot of intelligent and witty people here, dont know why but most fasion related forums have much more "generic" talk.

6. How many people have you met from sufu and actually interacted with offline?

I just read at first, learning what the social cues were before entering the fray, so I never got a tough time from anyone. I remember being slightly overwhelmed with all of the label names that I couldn't decipher (xx005, SD103, s0500xx, etc.)

2. Do you feel like your avatar/username is an extension of your offline personality? If yes, how so? If no, why not?

I guess a little. I picked the name Miles for a messageboard back in 2000.About a week prior to that, I made a long-term plan to one day get an english bulldog and name him Miles (for Miles Davis). I used it as my name because I didn't want to forget.

I suppose I see myself a bit as a cool, jazzy guy. But the name doesn't embody me or anything. And no, I still haven't bought the dog.

3. When you got your first rep points what was it for? Did you have to ask? Was it from someone you knew? What do you think people consider most when they give positive rep? In other words what drives you to give rep?

It was a few months ago, when I made my first WAYWT post. Tangerine liked my outfit. Since I'm not a power player here, I assume he was sincere. I also think everybody would agree that Tangerine is also one of the nicest guys on the board, so I wouldn't be surprised if he was just trying to foster a quietier guy like me to become more active.

Personally, I don't think I've ever given rep for somebody's outfit. Only when somebody writes something intelligent, funny, or helpful.

4. In terms of gender, how many users (in percent) would you approximate to be male or female? Do you think sufu attracts more heterosexual or homosexuals?

It would seem 99+% male. Think I can count all of the female members on one hand.

I can't accurately estimate sexuality, since I'm only aware of a few board members who bring it up. It's safe to guess that it skews more homosexual than the reported global average due to generalizations about fashion and homosexuals.

If reported global average is 90% straight, then maybe SuFu is 80% straight?

5. What interests you the most about sufu? What keeps you coming back?

While my style doesn't scream elitest, I like having the knowledge of an elitest.

6. How many people have you met from sufu and actually interacted with offline?

Two. Met Kiya at his store, and one other board member was there.

lurking and educating myself on all of the insane amount of knowledge floating around here in late 2005, reading the apc and nudie threads, laughing at the ridiculous shit jupafett and dctmfc were posting. when i registered i dont remember really getting any shit for being a noob, people were pretty cool.

my first rep was from mike lowrey, i had no idea what rep was so i was pretty pleased to get repped by a mod. i think a lot of people give rep based on either funny posts or especially informative posts, i know that when i give out rep its for someone making me laugh.

definately like, 98% male. i would say there are more straight guys here, judging by how much dudes on here talk about/post pictures of them with girls and stuff. although its definately not discriminating towards gay guys/girls in any way (except for that one guy who got banned)

theres a huge variety of interesting people who share similar interests and viewpoints with me, moreso than people in my actual life. i don't talk about denim and fashion in depth with my real friends.

When i first started i generally got good well answered responses, i was amazed at this almost obsessive jeans culture that i wanted to learn about. When i started here the new'b bashing wasnt as rough as it is now so i got it fairly easy. I did shy away a bit after seeing people buying ridiculously expensive stuff, well i thought at the time now i am a bit used to it.

My real first name is Alvaro, so my user name is just that spelled phonetically and my avatar is a picture of me eating a hamburger, so yes they are extensions of me cause well i am a bit ego centric.

My first rep points came when rep was first introduced and it was a random rep given to everyone that posted on that thread, it was from Keri and i dont really interact with her much. I generally rep well informed, humorous or well dressed individuals, oh and also if someone reps me with 'please return the favor' i usually do.

I think that its like 98 percent guys here, and as far as i know there is only a couple of gay members so i think its a majority straight males.

I have always been interested in jeans, so i like reading about different styles, seeing how they fade, different brands, things like that. I also like being introduced to the different style cultures, streetwear, traditional, dressy, and amalgams of it all.

I dont know if this counts but i bought some jeans over the phone directly from Sam at context.

my closest friends have horrible style, so no i wouldnt ask for style tips from them, but they have asked me for tips.

i think it stings less when a 'stranger' critiques you then having i real person get in your face saying damn you look like shit.

Im still pretty new, but my initial memory of sufu was that I was a bit daunted by some talk of brands that I had never heard of and really didnt know where to start. I was googling for information on raw denim jeans etc. and the top result was almost always a sufu thread. I stopped googling and bookmarked sufu. So I came here looking to find out more about quality denim but have learned so much more than I ever intended to!

No one has given me a tough time. Like with any forum, if you have respect for the regular members and post educated, well-thought messages you generally wont have a hard time. I dont see anyone here being assholes for the sake of it. The harshest responses is critique in the WAYWT thread, but that is usually deserved and is constructive.

2. Do you feel like your avatar/username is an extension of your offline personality? If yes, how so? If no, why not?

My username is based on the naming convention used in legal matters, hospitals, etc. For example if someones' name was John Smith, Think of it as Smith, John....My first name starts with a H and I have just left out my last name. I try to let what I type define who I am, avatars to me are just useful for recognition at a glance.

3. When you got your first rep points what was it for? Did you have to ask? Was it from someone you knew? What do you think people consider most when they give positive rep? In other words what drives you to give rep?

I was first repped when I showed some drawings I did in the "post your creations' thread. It wasnt by anyone I knew, and I would never ask for rep. In fact I am pretty nuetral on the idea of repping. It doesnt bother me either way, but I think it can be a nice touch if and when people are genuine. All the times I have been repped I feel it has so that is nice. I usually give rep if I see something I like, a great fit in WAYWT, a great photograph, a funny/ amusing comment. I dont give rep as a means to climb up the social ladder, as it may or not be.

4. In terms of gender, how many users (in percent) would you approximate to be male or female? Do you think sufu attracts more heterosexual or homosexuals?

Probably high 95% male. I do not know about the hetero/ homo cross section. I assume there would be more homosexual males inclined to post here than other forums based on stereotypical views on males and fashion, but I try not to buy into that. I think most guys on here are hetero but are sophisticated enough to take pride in appearance and dress well.

5. What interests you the most about sufu? What keeps you coming back?

Always learning. Always something interesting, steady ammount of new posts. I tend to get very obsessed with any new feild of interest i take and feel I learn any given subculture rather quickly to the point there isnt much to excite me and I become bored. With fashion, I have always been interested but sufu always gives me fresh avenues to look at and the whole fashion subculture is so large that there is always something to interest me. Plus for the most part, people that post on sufu know what they are talking about.

6. How many people have you met from sufu and actually interacted with offline?

None as of yet.

Not much. A lot of the time, people on sufu are the best people to ask for advice on the way jeans fit, what to wear with etc. I like the fact that I can talk much more freely to my female friends about fashion, have my own veiws and opinions, and confidence to wear what I want. I think that makes it interesting for them as well as me. Occasionaly I make speak of something that amused me on sufu but to be honest talking to people about "cool" things on a forum kind of looks lame. Its more of a "you had to be there thing", but it is not at all limited to sufu. I just apply what I have learnt here to conversations about the subject.

8. Do you think that people on here are more inclined to use this site to get advice versus doing it in person? Why?

Its easier when you have relative anonimity. Plus, if one of the WAYWT regulars tells me something I am wearing doesnt work, then I respect that comment becuase based on how they are dressed I know I have trust in them. I dont really care what people think of how I am dressed until I know they know what they are talking about. Shop assistants are best ignored because they will say anything to sell their items, save for a handful of smaller stores I know of. I guess I have maybe one or two people in my life that I let give me advice on attire, and those on sufu that I know have sharp dress sence.

I discovered sufu through honestforum. And generally the whole of honestforum thought sufu was full of nasty people, rude, noob-flamers. I was very weary my initial posts here because I didnt want anyone to flame me. I think most of the agression came from the denim thread. Whenever someone started a stupid new thread, 10 people would come in and continuously combo flame his ass. But Im glad I discovered sufu. theres so much knowledge and different styles and porn here. If I can tap into that it'd be amazing. I'll admit that sufu has made me somewhat elitist. I secretly laugh at guys and girls who wear 7 jeans and true religions, although some girls who wear TR are really hot. And I really want to grab their butt. But I cant wear raw denim in jail

I also admit that insidertrading/stayhandsome's fits are one of the reason why I signed up. (NO HOMO)

I think I got it on WAYWT. It was pretty obvious what it was, but I wasent sure how it worked. I thought it was some limited edition thing so I rarely gave it out, untill I discovered that it recharges every day. I didnt know that I could read who the rep was from untill 2-3 months ago. It was like reading messages from an unknown source. When I finally discovered that I got repped by cool people, I sexed myself long time. If i could change the system I'd make it easier to re-rep people you've repped before. Alot of the rep I give out are to people who really deserve it, and alot are to people who dont. Good fit, nice picture, creativity, wit, humour.

I've been here awhile, and came here for denim advice after being referred on (gasp NIKETALK). People were generally nice to me because i soaked up what i could, and tried to avoid the stupid questions of others (which resulted in combo-flames). Its amazing to see how much this site has grown, and after the recent upgrades to the msg board, the userbase has exploded expontentially...

Yeah i had to ask , the whole rep thing seemed kind of pointless to me at first, and while i wasnt really making any great posts (i tend to read more and post less), I wanted to get out of the grey box because thats mad annoying for someone who's been a member here so long with X number of posts. I actually think the rep system is sorta cool now though still somewhat cliquely(sp?). It's very unique to this site, and helps avoid people assuming early join dates or high post counts mean that a member is the best.

Everything about it, the diverse people, the great fits. WAYWT thread. Awesome denim advice. But most of all the diverse group of people here who come from all walks of life, parts of the world, and styles. I seem SF grow, and it seems to me like its only getting better, as its more active than ever, and the new forum catergories allowed people to branch out and express themselves outside of fashion.

Most of my friends have very limited fashion sense/knowledge, and arent into looking good and finding interesting pieces as much as i am. I dont even consider myself that fashion forward, but I usually talk with female friends more about that type of shit. But i find alot of girls have terrible knowledge of male clothing (particuarly those who read US weekly and that sort of shit)

1- pretty abraisive and intimidating, I asked silly questions and instead of simple answears I got alot of responces that presumed I knew what they did.

2- Avatar is no that close to my real personality, im not at all hiphop. I just thought the character was cute.

3- 1st rep was for a sarky comment in the trash. I give rep for real contributions in general, I really value rep when its given for a snippet of info or advice. I dont think this is really the norm though, seeing as some users just go from thread to thread posting a useless snide or sarky comment.

4- 5%female10%male - i think the majority of men here are heterosexual.

5- Its the best place to find new products and opinions on them, however there is a social aspect and reading confessionals can become quite compulsive. I big positive re-inforcement is when poeple respond to your posts I guess.

6 - havent met anyone offline, yet..... to my knowledge.
