shemagh schmemagh

I don't care either way about keffiyah scarves, but for those who do: Where some see fashion, others see politics

Some choice quotes:

Dr. Swedenburg doesn’t think it should be viewed this way. “I think to associate [the shemgah] directly with terrorism is to tar all Palestinians with the brush of terrorism,” he said. “That’s a mischaracterization.”

....

In its 2007 revival, the kaffiyeh has similar sidekicks. “It’s hipster 101: I need my skinny jeans, some sort of scarf and a beat up T-shirt,” Ms. Hukahori said. “O.K., I’m a hipster now.”

my parents are going on a daytrip this weekend to manhattan, and I've asked them to pick me up a shemagh. Would st. mark's place be their best bet to find your typical black-and-white one? I know for a fact that my mom will be in the area of lafayette and mulberry out of her own interests, so if there's any place in the vicinity, that would be even cooler. I really don't give a rat's ass if that chunky asian girl from the article thinks it's played out, I have yet to see a SINGLE person in connecticut wearing one and I think they look sharp.

also, price estimate would be helpful.. I'm guessing anywhere between $5-$15?

p.s. I'm also asking my mom to stop by supreme to pick me up a new era cap... I am willing to take bets on the level of apathy she shall encounter from the employees. I would normally accompany them on the trip and search out these items myself, but I'll be out of state.

It really doesn't bother me when someone wears a shemagh unless they are a girl, because if a girl wore a shemagh in the Middle East they would more than likely be stoned. Women who wear shemaghs and think they are making a fashion statement by doing it are taking ignorance to an entire new level.

If anything, that gives more justification for a girl to wear one. Fuck the backwards ways of the Middle East. Guys there can wear whatever shit they want... shorts and a beater, Allah approve! But if a woman shows hair... OMGHOLYFUCKINSHIT...ALLAH FORBIDS! STONE HER!

see...

the teenage fanclub screen name makes me really want to like you.

but the ignorant generalizations about "the middle east" have outed you as a complete and utter tool.

How the fuck is politics involved?

Don't people wear shemaghs because they like Iron Shiek?

As far as I know, he is the only person in the world who really wears them.......

I used to know this guy named Ishmael who did that for a living; alas, he suffered a severe anus explosion. I do know a guy, however, who has great camel toe; will that work?

Sharia law is a reality, get over it. Also even if it was a more liberal Middle Eastern country (like Dubai, Turkey, etc.) women wouldn't be allowed to wear shemaghs. Shemaghs are the traditional headresses of Arab men.

Also these two quotes go on to prove my point:

. “I’m not too up to speed in what’s going on in the Middle East,†said Liz Chernett, a strategic consultant in branding and a youth trends expert who bought a kaffiyeh from a vendor on St. Mark’s Place three months ago. “It’s an aesthetic thing.â€

and

“I’ve gotten a lot of comments about it, like, ‘Doesn’t that support terrorists?’ †she said. “ ‘Aren’t you Jewish?’ †(Ms. Chernett said she is half-Jewish.)

Bwahahah. That means if she wore that on the streets of Damascus she would be stoned twice. A jewish woman wearing a shemagh is a bad combo.

i bow to your superior intellect and the flawless logic you've so expertly employed in eviscerating me with your brain power.

silly chicks. first they wanted to vote, then it was wear pants, and now this?

hey, its a good thing i live in the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA which (last time i checked) allowed men and, yes, even women (!!!) to wear whatever the fuck they want without getting stoned on the streets! people may laugh and point but that is likely the worst that will happen to a women who decides to wear an ostentatious scarf.

i think those who would apply such ridiculous standards to a non religious garment are the trully ignorant.

and why should any woman in a forward thinking country prescribe to barbaric cultural standards of those who still treat females like property???

cultural appropriation bothers me greatly. at the very least, all i can ask for, is that the person be aware of the implications of what it is that they are choosing to wear. however, for the most part, people do not educate themselves about the significance, and thusly, piss me off.

however, i've learned to just laugh inwardly at people, rather than bludgeon them with stones.

this however, might send me over the edge:

This is gets an F for logic.

Is it okay for men to wear these things then? Are you allowing men to be ignorant when wearing them?

What do you really think? (no sarcasm)

+1 cult. I was going to make mention of women now being able to wear pants and vote as well. You pretty much said what I was thinking, but I guess mine came off as too harsh and/or offensive. Ignoring the hipster/Urban Outfitters/anti-war scarf issue, if a woman wants to wear one in North America, Europe, heck anywhere else in the world except certain ME countries, she has the right to. Yeah, Turkey, UAE and Lebanon are relatively liberal. Or at least parts of these countries are.

I'm sure some war vets don't care for you wearing your M65... but don't let that stop you.

I'm not saying that they can't wear them. What I meant to say was that it is ignorant for women to wear shemeghs and at the same time think its cool to do so without knowing any of the cultural and religious significance behind it (a la the half jewish girl in the NYTimes article).

In other words a woman wearing a shemegh would be like a christian wearing a yamikah or a muslim wearing a rosary.

And I completely agree with you that it is a good thing that we live in a forward thinking country like the United States, but I would caution all women (and all men for that matter) to really know what kind of message you are sending by wearing a shemegh. If you are a woman and you wear one to give a big F-U to those crazy ass Jihadists back over there in the middle east then I am all for it, however if you are like the half-jewish girl in the NYTimes article then I'd say you are quite the ignoramous.
