Came across this website today couchsurfing.com, name says it all, you can stay on the couch at peoples home on your travels and spend your hard earned on other stuff than hotels. Also you get to make friends wherever you go and see a different side of the cities if youre in luck.

Heres an article about it http://www.dn.se/DNet/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=1063&a=606579 (in swedish) a guy that went to NYC for a few days and tried it out and worked out great for him and he spent zero dollars on hotels.
