thanks Fycus for the malin+goetz vitamin E moisturizer rec. It goes on really well and feels like nothing at all. It also lasts throughout the day. The lotion does leave a bit of sheen on my face by 5pm, but, manageable. I think it is kind of like a dewy effect lol.

Accidentally ordered 2 double-double on Monday and forgot to ask for no cheese (I asked for no spread). Crossing fingers that nothing happens. It tasted pretty delicious no eating cheese for hella long time, but I was dreading the inevitable.

I don't know what the hell I'm doing wrong but whenever I wear this moisturizer, at the end of the day it gets in my eyes (perhaps being mixed with sweat that accumulates during the day?) and stings/burns the hell out of them.

are you outdoors a lot and sweat? i'm indoors 24/7 so haven't had that experience. we'll see when i hit the gym again. thanks for the heads up.

You may also want to see whether you're applying too much. I actually use a little to cover around my eye and eyelids FWIW and haven't experienced any irritation in my eyes.

I've found that diet is closely related to how oily my skin looks. the more processed foods and sugars I have, coupled with a lack of vegetables tends to contribute to oily skin. Also things like stress and if your skin is too dry your body will also over compensate oil secretion. You can counteract this by exfoliating areas that are shiny, using a non-oily lotion, oil pads (as you had mentioned), and adding a little baby power to your lotion application to matte the shine but this is only temporary.

aha seems to just make my skin look good the morning after, and prolonged use with bp makes me breakout/irritates my skin. probably going to look into that vitamin E recommendation and switching moisturizer to just pure aloe vera and jojoba oil

honestly, i eat mostly good all the time, and drink water/ green tea, rarely have sugary drinks or anything and never noticed something with my oil production. i rarely have fast food, eat vegetable everyday.

my body is dry, hands too, face combination/ oily.

i just ordered a sample of this for 1 $ have lot of great reviews, obvisiouly its not a permanent internal solution.

im blessed enough that my oily skin doesnt give me breakout or problems.

Is there a Kiehl's product that is particular good? Visiting back home and noticed they have a small Kiehl's store here and have never used anything from them so wondering if there's anything worth going for.

personally, no. aesop and m+g both do it miles better for only slightly more.

I have no experience with Malin + Goetz but a lot of Aesop stuff is quite overpriced for what it is (Like the oil-free hydrating serum) and can be kind of problematic for people with somewhat sensetive skin

IME I only have enjoyed using the Paula's Choice BHA 2% liquid exfoliant.

Tried the various moisturizers and sun screens, threw them all away after first use.

the Malin+Goetz vitamin e moisturizer is a godsend.

i've only used the Aesop deodorant spray once. It does have a nice woody smell but after a few use the pump broke and I stopped using it so regularly. Upon using the bottle after sometime, my armpits were stinging after spraying on the deodorant. not sure if it spoiled but never picking it up again. i liked the smell though. (If anyone has suggestions for similarly smelling cologne let me know.)

aesop is overpriced lol, its like the designer of skincare products lmao. and all there products have irritants ingredients and scented things.

i never used paulas choice moisturizer.

only the BHA 1% gel exfoliant, work good for me.

currently using Cerave moisturizer, do the job and easy to find, good ingredients.

Really looking forward to find a solution to my oily skin tho. It get bad by the end of the day normally.

the overwhelming majority of niche skincare/cosmetics/fragrances are stupidly overpriced so there's not much point crying about it. never said that aesop was perfect (i only buy their 'classic' shampoo on a regular basis), but i'd still use anything in their line before kielhs who i have always found to be complete garbage. s/o to them for having hot sa's in pristine white lab coats, though.

Aesop is literally twice the price of most comparable products, and that's if we're buying it in Australia, people buying it outside Australia have to pay even more

Dude I know in the UK pays like 35 pounds (So almost 70 AUD) for the Amazing Face Cleanser - I'm not comparing that to the price of clearasil, but a lot of highly rated small skincare labels don't charge anywhere near that much

What're people's recommendations for a day moisturizer for combination/oily skin with at least moderate sun protection (so hopefully greater than spf15) - or is it just better off getting a sunscreen as well?

yeah im wondering the same thing, it seem like every moisturizer with sunscreen is shitty. currently using one without

So I used a few different things depending on what is at hand. If I'm out for a short while I'll throw on some Aesop hydrating cream which has spf 15 something. Sometimes I'll want to use a cc cream and the Peter Thomas Roth one is by far the best I've used - that's spf 30.

But for heavier stuff what i've picked up (from my other half who is a makeup artist/skincare specialist) is find 2 products which work for you and mix them. So I'll go with a Josie Maran argan oil/suncreen mix or a normal hydrating cream mix with sunscreen. The thickness and greasiness of the scunreen is important if you're going to mix it with stuff which is why I use a light one (Cancer Council Everyday sunscreen - spf 30).

Peter Thomas Roth does some normal day moisturisers with spf 30 in it, which if you want to match them to combination/ oily skin, just mix them in the palm of your hand with some argan oil. I've got too much by the way of other products to get through before I'd consider trying his other range but I'm told it works well.

shout out to Fycus! I have to say since using the malin+goetz vitamin e moisturizer i've only had 1 breakout. actually just this week but it pretty much went away fairly quick.

I still get large bump like breakouts (never had full blown acne, just a history of cysts) it seems, so, it maybe more to do with my diet and stress. FWIW the moisturizer definitely helped calm the area and made the whole ordeal bearable. the area stayed moisturized until it started drying up on its own and the clogged pore finally broke open. didn't even apply much pressure.

anyone use clarisonic? is the brush really soft like a badger brush? my cyst breakouts could also be that i do not rub my face hard enough i think to really get into the pores. when i shower i just use my paula's choice face wash and scrub with my hands. i used a badger brush before but felt that my fingers and palm could feel exactly where i am cleaning. i can't imagine the clarisonic tool giving me that tangible experience but perhaps it provides a deeper scrub.

edit:

lowk: I have pretty fair skin so any past breakouts do leave behind a visible mark. i've pretty much given up on trying to correct this because it's a natural process. your skin will eventually correct itself as you age IMO. just need to moisturize, which if your blemishes are not that contrasting to your skin tone should already help soften the appearance. it will eventually go away IME however short or long depending on the extent of the damaged skin. the malin+goetz definitely helped me as it keeps my entire face moisturized and matte finish instead of being dry that can exaggerate bad skin. keep in mind where you are and the lighting can play a major part on your skins appearance if you're more self-conscious about it. keeping your face moisturized has a certain characteristic (i wouldn't say sheen because ideally you want it to stay matte) but throughout our day we do perspire. point being, light reflects off your skin. imagine being under the sun with your skin in a health glow and then the opposite.

And I know this is a skincare thread but keep in mind other features of your head can magnify your skin. For example, hair and how it's styled/cut. (I really need a haircut...)

edit:

Someone pointed out that i shouldn't be eating too much chocolate as it can cause inflammation in your body. Chinese really believe in this type of stuff. then, realized i've been consuming at least a glass of chocolate almond milk the last 2 weeks or so (still have a 2nd carton in the office). this can definitely be the reason why i broke out since it's not really part of my normal diet. i splurged a bit when cravings kicked in. =\ (i still finished the cup i poured tonight as it was after the fact. feeling a bit guilty though.)

Genetics have given me generally really clean, healthy skin but I've been having trouble as of late.  In the winter my skin gets really dry, but still oily near my nose and I've been breaking out as of late.  I've also had issues with what seems to be ingrown hairs like toasty mentioned.

My routine has been pretty negligent; just cetaphil when I'm in the shower and I occasionally moisturize.  I think I need to just start by learning to shave better. Any advice about the break outs and skin? I was going to look into getting a moisturizer and exfoliant scrub from Kiehls or M+G

yeah finding a shaving technique is very important. for me since I'm still using a disposal gillette razor:

1. I use the razor for at most 5 days. if i feel any drag i just toss the razor head and replace with a new one. (dampening your face beforehand and getting a good lather and application is also important to help with the shaving.)

2. take long strokes between shaves, rinse, and repeat (if you dampen your skin and apply a good lather, one clean stroke should be able to lift and cut the hair. i'm using razor blades from costco.)

3. shave with the grain. you may need to pivot your blade when shaving, too i.e. right side of the blade for the right side of your mustache and  likewise for the left. the middle you can gently shave downwards to clean it up.

4. you want to apply pressure enough for the blade to glide with your shaving cream. a good blade can usually cut in one motion. I also try to avoid going over the area twice.

5. never shave against the grain

for me i then just rinse thoroughly any excess cream and let the water air dry before applying my moisturizer in the morning. a vid maybe better but generally by following the above i have experienced much better shaving experience. a nice badger brush also works wonders. gentle on the skin and builds up a good lather. I recently picked up an Edwin Jagger super badger off Amazon. no razor bumps or ingrown hair as of late.

(i'll also mention that i soak the brush with the razor blade in a bowl in hot water while i'm washing up and then shave at the end.)

As Fycus pointed out, you just need to find a good moisturizer that your skin likes and get in the habit of applying it. for me, before using the malin+goetz it was both the application and greasiness that made me reluctant on using one. i can say M+G goes on smooth, absorbs well and for the most part stays matte throughout the day. M+G spreads well across the surface.

I have kinda fair skin as well but I'm out in the sun a bit so I was wondering if there was anything to help speed the process so the sun doesn't darken my scars/spots. I know to wear sunscreen but does anyone have one they like thats light/mostly natural? I dont like putting on most sunscreens because it feels too oily unless I shower before to dry my skin.

I've been trying to minimize my routine & keep it pretty basic and natural with products. If anyone has any recs (a cheap & expensive choice would help) for my routine let me know.

Day:

Thayers non-alc toner

Neutrogena ultra gentle soothing lotion with spf 15 (anyone have a better/lighter moisturizer?)

Night:

Neutrogena ultra gentle daily cleanser

Thayers non-alc toner

Paula's choice 2% bha liquid (haven't really noticed a diff from using this, should I be?)

Neutrogena ultra gentle soothing lotion with spf 15

Should I be exfoliating or using scrub at all?
