Pleated pants: why not?

With a "proper job" now apparently I have to start dressing up. Asking around though apparently pleated pants are taboo. So I pose this question to the style experts of superfuture; pleated pants: yay or nay?

It's fine! Jesus, at long as the pleats are not all over the place and the pants fit you, no ones gonna care anyways.

Pleated pants only look good if you are slimmer and taller. For the shorter man (under 5'8") they are ill advised unless you are pretty trim. Just my opinon. I am 5' 7" with a 36 waist and pleats look really terrible on me.

Ok. Two for, two against. I still think 2000db's thoughts are the closest to my thoughts on the matter.

I've got a 31-32 waist. And I don't know what it is in imperial measurements, but I'm about 1.66 metres.

theres nothing intrinsically wrong with pleats. decide for yourself if you like the look. personally i have larger thighs so i avoid them.

unless it's a single pleat, i say stick with flat front. dont let corporate culture have you by the balls on something trivial like this.

Unless you are trying to pull some dapper 20's kind of thing (which is cool and everything), stick to flat front. On the few occasions that I have had to wear a suit (crappy ill fitting $100 kind of deal) I find that pleated pants make me look like i have a boner. they just lay weird. although i think a tall, slim guy could wear pleats if he pleased.

pleats were in fashion to show you could afford excess material.

but now the general consensus is the streamlined, unfussy, skinny-dior-esque is the new king.

thus pleats arent exactly high fashion.

but pleats can hide chunky thighs, and also the centrl crease down the middle, when it breaks just at the top of yur shoe, thats a good look.

in the end, wear what you think the majority will approve of.

Topman, I bagged a black pair for a fiver on sale and a grey pair for a tenner the season before that, very similar low-rise/slim fit cut with central pleats.

I wonder if I could do pleated khakis. Get really bad associations from it, but I agree with polio, it can look good. I think carin wester have a alot of dropped crotch , loose fit pleated pants f/w 08.. that could work.

(Like many posters before me,) I think that people generally make too big a deal about pleats. That said, don't wear pleated shorts!

Nothing wrong with pleated shorts with dressier outfits. Infact I think it would be preferable imo.

I'm apparently one of the few who believe pleats are hideous. At first glance yeah... they add an extra element that looks "nice". But they usually make you look like you have thunder hips at any and all angles. And as far as I know, pleats in pants were designed specifically for the larger male looking for a more comfortable fit. I say pleats on dark colored pants IF you need the space. Flat fronts on khaki's.

Just look at the second picture poliopoliopolio posted. I personally do not find the flare in the hips attractive.

Those pants were clearly designed to exagerate the hips. I don't think it's the result of only pleats. If you want good examples of pleated pants that dont make the legs look at Jil Sander from FW07. All the pants were incredible and many pleated.

the emphasis on volume that pleated pants offer can be utilised to very interesting effect in an outfit. polio's selections are intriguing, especially the second, and a quick reference to Yohji gives even more ideas about voluminous pleated pants.
