You can get most of the mass produced stuff in the United States too, so if your trying to pull out the big guns and blow people away, bring back a bottle of first growth. Château Lafite Rothschild, Château Margaux, etc., etc...

Or some Krug Clos du Mesnil if your trying to put the satin in her panties and your a true G.

you should test and taste the beaujolais nouveau, in champagne moet and chandon, mumm, and ask for dom perignon if you have dollars to spend

Those are all available everywhere.

these are some serious big guns, if he's asking, I don't think he should be buying these or any grand crus etc. ;)

don't buy champagne in France, the price is about the same as in the states and you can find what pretty much anything you want in New York anyway. Wine on the other hand is much cheaper than in the States and you can find so much nice stuff. i would advise staying away from Beaujolais Nouveau, the wine is all about hype (kind of like the BAPE of wine) and it's not worth the price. almost all of it is exported also, as most French ppl wouldn't go anywhere near it. if you have some time, i would recommend checking out wine auction. there's some gems to be found and you can usually buy some lot of fairly diverse wine, which is perfect for tasting with friends. not to mention that it's usually dirt cheap (wine is already so cheap in France anyway). don't hesitate to go to a large liquor store or department store (the wine section at Galerie Lafayette is pretty awesome) and ask for advice.

A lot of wine travels very badly - you'll taste it in France and think it awesome, but upon opening it when you get home it'll not be nearly as good. Bear this in mind.

Where in France are you? It's probably worth checking out the local vinyards for interesting cheaper labels.

In Provence the roses are excellent - Domaine Ott is probably the best, but roses travel worse than any other kind, so there's not much point bringing any back.

Can you even bring it home? I didn't think any liquids over a certain amount (3 oz. in a ziplock) could be carried on.

And stowing your oenophile stash in you check-in seems too risky.

I've got a bottle of Chateau Margaux '95 that I'm anxious to try soon.

it's fine as long as it's in your checked luggage. if it's well packed, it shouldn't be a problem, every time i went to france, i left with a half emply suitcase cause i knew i would bring back tons of wine and food and i never broke anything. of course the "delicate" handling by the airline can affect the wine, but i never found that it was really bad. just don't get caught by the customs when you get back ;)

Andre or J Roget! ;)

I also have heard that the champagne isn't that much cheaper or more exclusive in france. There are so many specialty wine stores in every city now that you can find most anything anywhere. Those stores usually will order whatever you want if they don't have it too. Good luck anyways.
