As the voice of caution, I would advise you not to remove too much material to achieve the look you are after; rims will have lines from the extrusion and trying to get a perfectly flat, shiny finish will be removing a bit of material and weakening them even further than the grease stripper will.

Alternatively, VO sells very inexpensive, high-quality polished rims. Save time and work...

i biked up to the highest point in Santa Barbara yesterday

got to the top of a mountain, La Cumbre peak: 3985ft elevation

it was 7 or 8% a good deal of the way

pretty big accomplishment for me

saw a guy in an Astana jersey while I was descending, couldn't tell if he was actually on the team though

Honestly, I'd just get a Kilo or some other bikesdirect number for $350. It's cheaper, new, won't be as heavy, and imo will look better. Negatives are that you probably will need to take it to a shop to be put together safely if you don't know your way around a wrench, you can't ride it before purchase, and will have to wait a few days for shipping. But I think the positives outweigh the negatives.

I've been looking at Marinoni bikes, and can't quite figure out the difference between the Pista and Strada frames, besides a bit of geometry and the forks. The Strada is touted as the "urban designed" (Christ...) steel alternative to the pista, but it seems that they just switched the fork for a steel one, and the frame is the same. Anyone know anything about either of these bikes?

already said this to some up above, but lean your bike up against things driveside out. it makes your bike look nicer. also, congrats on yyour accomplishment.

every once in a while i'll see a roadie out on the dirt trails i go running on, up in the hills, and i always think 'what the fuck?'

cross or road for sure? i lived in wash, dc and routinely rode my road bike on relatively smooth singletrack and a barge canal (called the W&OD) that was a lime/gravel/shell surface. good reason to ride 26c tires all the time.

fuck no, that's way too expensive for something like that.

cosign the above two.

just copped the frame and fork for the cheap

what are the plans for it? dedicated tt rig (1 chainring out front)? tri rig - bento box and seatpost bottles? (please god say no). haha j/k, nice score.

Hey I have some experience with marinoni, I bought a pista frame/fork last summer (09) and had it custom painted by the marinoni factory up in canada. I'm actually selling it now since I got a cx bike, but when I was riding the pista I absolutely loved it; the colombus zonal tubing is wonderful for street riding or any riding for that matter. Can't say much about the Strada since I've never ridden one. Here's a pic of when I had my Marinoni built up it's a size 52 and I'm selling it for $450 (frame/fork only):
