Has anyone done a "romantic repro" of an Orange Tab?

So, has anyone done a "romantic repro" of the famous orange tabs?

Hope you understand what I mean by "romantic repro"... denim that is historically inaccurate cos its been repro'd so much better. Much heavier denim, nicer dye, neater stitching, leather patches etc.

Sort of like Sugar Cane's take on the 55s and 47s.

Its kind of obsessive but I really want an orange tab repro, since I never quite found a good levis pair.

^ co-sign on the question... weren't there 606s, 505s, 501s and 646s that were orange tab?

And did anybody else see that LVC Japan 1983 501 repro floating around? I thought it was funny that they were reproing a model that was still relatively easy to obtain... but I guess when it comes to the denim maniacs, you can never be too complete, huh?

OK, here is my idea for the orange tab romantic repro.

Sugar Cane if you reading this baby, we need to make this a reality.

Orange Tab 505, SC repro

- 47 based fit with a very slight taper.

- felled inseam and outseam.

- paper patch

- 14.5 oz denim / the type which eventually fades to sky blue.

- long rectangular back pockets, as per Levis 1980s

- sanforized so no twisting on legs.

- sexy orange tab!!!!!!!!!!

Shit, can we make these selvedge instead?!

  • 2 weeks later...

I was under the impression that there was a saddleman jeans 517 repros out there. Bootleg. Maybe the SC bootleg cut?

someone told me years ago that most orange tabs were made in philadelphia, dont know if this is true or not. i always assumed that the orange tabs were of slightly inferior quality than the red tabs. ive had a few great pairs of orange tab levis though.

i found a little snippet about this subject ...

"A back pocket trimmed with the Levi's® orange Tab was a detail introduced in the 1960s to differentiate the newer styles of Levi's® Jeans from the classic red Tab range at the time. Orange tab was used only on Levi's jeans not produced in its historic San Francisco plant. Many thought the quality of red tab jeans was highest, and 501's with red tabs commanded a premium. When Levi's ceased US manufacturing, it made all its jeans red tab. Ironically, orange tabs are now more collectible than red tabs in certain models, especially flare styles.

wasn't the orange tab used to indicate that the jeans weren't produced in the U.S? From what I remember orange tabs were produced in Canada...
