anyone know what causes this exactly? I had read somewhere that its dependent on how slubby the denim is.. so I'm hoping my PBJs fade nice like Ryu's picture.

It's true that it looks somewhat like the denim on my 811. But those train tracks are very nice. I hope to have a similar result after 16 months!

Has a lot to do with how the yarn is spun, imo, of course.

When the yarn has a subtle thick and thin texture, some parts of some threads would pop up a little, and get more abrasion, and wear off more denim.

I'm wondering now if there's a correlation between tension on the wefts during weaving and slub... as in, do these Japanese denims with the cazy slub like PBJ's and these come off shuttle looms that have held the wefts a lot looser than something off a modern projectile loom?

Also, I kind of agree with keri and think that maybe a lot of it is in the waft yarn' uniformity or lack thereof that might cause such variegation...

some of the most noticable vertical fading ive seen is on gap jeans. its just that the warp threads are different sizes. the big ones fade before the small ones.

Ditto. I was at express for ladies and noticed that many of their jeans are extremely slubby. It goes without mentioning that the denim was crap though. So, I guess the conclusion could be made that slubbiness does not equal denim greatness.

I noticed the same thing for some Bluenotes jeans in Canada. Think its crappy quality tho, they dont sell them around here so I am not sure, but they are sold at a 'cheap' retailer

I think ringring mentioned that this effect was produced by combing the denim.

we were chatting about how "scary" McCoy is. (kind of like how some people use "bad"-- it's a compliment) the jeans look like you can still keep wearing it for a long time, but it's a good time to move on to the next project kind of thing.

tokio (in french). setagaya-ku, to be more precise.

do you know which part of japan you're moving to? tokyo will have all the stores but kansai is closer to where all the jeans are made. not that it's such a big country or anything, but.

I'm going to move to Tokyo because that's where all the people I know are. Hopefully I'll have time and money to visit around a bit.

BTW in french Tokyo is still Tokyo
