What do you think the cowboys, miners and labourers of the turn of the century would think of... relatively wealthy Europeans and Japanese people who've never done that kind of work in their life, paying very premium prices for what is essentially workwear, that (I guess) they would have tried NOT to wear in their leisure time?

Don't know why I thought of this, but its been formulating in my mind for a while whenever I think about the premium repros...

I doubt theyd give it a second thought...just the young acting young....we'll all be old soon enough and we'll probably give our kids shit for wearing what they wear....like...in the year 2040 underwear will become casual clothing...cos everyone will be in outerspace..and it gets hot in those damn spacesuits

...paying very premium prices

considering that cost & retail prices dumped over the last 100 years of garment manufacturing an average 99%, paying a few hundred dollars on a good and longlasting pair of pants seems much but isn't:

Compare our income with a worker's income at the turn of last century, and he will have spent just the same portion of his income on his pants.

The difference is that today most people spend $1000 a year on 20 pair of inferiour quality (and therefore inexpensive) pants.

I reckon an average working stiff from 50 years ago would appreciate the whole selvage/premium denim thing, given that the quality is (generally) pretty good and quality has always (as a rule) been expensive. For me, I'll happily pay £160 for a pair of jeans, as long as they look good, fit well and use quality denim...by the same token if a £30 pair meet those same criteria, I'll buy them. Same with everything, I think people can be guilty of falling into the "exclusive" trap, paying large cash for something of inferior quality, just for the label. If a product is well made from good materials, I'll give it credit, no matter the price tag...by the way, I'm 35, my dad's 65 and we both wear selvage/raw denim, because it lasts well and looks good. It's all a matter of quality and good taste, not age or fashion. Fashion is for monkeys, style is something quite different.

Just wondering what SF'rs think is too much to pay for a pair of jeans, or anything else for that matter, assuming the quality is there, how much is too much and where does paying for quality end and being fleeced begin?

Thoughts anyone?
