Yeahhh ... It's near where I grew up and I hung out there when I was a kid - I discovered Japanese food and culture there so I guess it's the catalyst for the time I lived in japan ... Still buy my Groceries there sometimes when I go back and visit my folks but I don't even think it's called Oriental City anymore ...

Anyone seen any copies of the lightning denim book around lately? I want a copy, not only to read about denim but to help my Japanese studies.

I got one on ebay a few months back from a seller named "nadacow".

I used to go there when I lived in North London, I'm sure it used to be called something Japanese then it changed to oriental city when it was bought by a chinese company.

Not useless if you lived in NW London in the 90's .. It was called Yuahan ... we all called it Nakatomi plaza.

naw, anything even remotely related to lightning mag is cool around here. plus, i'm usually the first one to divert a thread. so no worries.

plus it's really interesting to me to get a sense of the japanese scene in london.

my curiosity got the best of me and did some more search. looks like oriental city used to be yaohan. yaohan is one of the largest japanese markets here in the states, too. i believe you can still find them in places like los angeles and new jersey.

Yup. Travelling about I spent the summer in Tokyo Holed up hanging out with guys I met in Australia, had the time of my life, so went back the year after and worked in an artists studio in Kanagawa.

artists studio in kanagawa sounds like quite an experience. i've got to bug you about it separately before we completely derail this thread.

I'm waiting until next year to buy anymore denim (besides the warehouse contest) though. I'm sure there are loads of things I want but it's probably best not to think too much.

i guess it's kind of endless if you start. but i do still want to recommend you to also look into free & easy's "hey mr. bootsman" issue. denim style book is one of the most amazing books you can get regarding japanese denim. but this free & easy issue is like that, but for boots. another thing you can get addicted on.

Oh that looks very interesting! My addiction to boots is in it's early stages... That is one thing I have to thank superfuture for.

I did pick up an issue of Lightning which was focused on footwear when I was in Japan in the spring. Might have been the Feb or March issue. Some very nice stuff in there.

if you already love boots, you are really going to love this free & easy issue. free & easy is actually even more volumous than lightning mags and contents are much bigger.

hi, just got my first pair of japanese denim and want to ask if you got any idea if the machine wash will do harm to my jeans? i wash my normal levis in the machine but just don't want to wreck my new jeans on the first wash. thanks.

Yes it will harm them. Under no circumstances can you wash cotton fabric from Japan unless you import Japanese water to do so.

you're dead on right, remember to also wear them in the tub and do a 100 degree Celsius hot soak !!

when i machine wash, i prefer to turn my jeans inside out and put them in a net. and use kaminari soap from samurai jeans®.

I hit the heavily soiled areas on mine with unscented Bronner's and soak them inside out in a bucket for 24 or more hours with a bit of woolite dark, then machine rinse through with cold water.

Works for me.
