Little Children is one of, if not the, best film of the past 5 or 10 years, hands down.

anybody who disagrees with me is wrong. this is not a matter of opinion.

i have to agree (maybe not the past 5 or 10 years) but it's a MUST!!! see this year. i had the pleasure of meeting kate winslet few times and when i talked to her after i saw the movie i couldn't even express myself. it's her best movie hands down, great acting.

Anyone seen Old Joy yet?

I'm excited by the posibility of Will Oldham in a featured role...

i saw it and i'm not gonna ruin it for anyone, but don't expect too much. i know a lot of people that love it but i would just call it a 'festival film', i would like it at sundance but didn't like it that much when i saw it at home.

Two 'newer' films I watched last week were:

- Art School Confidential - Different and enjoyable. Plays on all the ridiculous stereotypes of art students and had several funny moments. Is worth the rental fee I suppose.

- Thank You For Smoking - I thoroughly enjoyed this. It was witty, clever, and well acted. Very funny....

thought thank you for smoking was very good too. very clever and smart

i enjoyed "Thank You For Smoking", but i guess i thought it was a little too deonstrative... or something...didn't love it. plus there is a VERY similar movie called "Fast Food Nation" (biting the Eric Schlosser book) coming out next month about the fast food industry. I appreciate Hollywood getting political, though.

about Old Joy...I could see how it would be a better festival film than when you go see it in an empty indie theatre (or at home). Kinda the way i felt about Little Miss Sunshine, too. I enjoyed it, but could see how it would be much more successful at Sundance (which it was).

Are people excited at all about Babel, the new Iñárritu film? There have been some posts in this thread about 21 grams, i was wondering if anyone's looking ahead to this one. Personally, i thought Amores Perros was much better than 21 Grams, and i'm hoping Babel is great (although Brad Pitt is in it).

Babel looks like it is gonna be sweet. Haven't heard much buzz about "Running With Scissors".......I am looking forward to it but goddamn did it get bad reviews. Might have to rethink. Also VERY excited about "The Prestige", shit, it has 3 of my top 10 favorite actors in it. Anyone been to a screening yet?

Guest Fade to Black

just saw Flags of the Fathers today...BRILLIANT. Eastwood is on a roll...Philippe is great as the quiet emotional center of the film, subtle but powerful performance...the guy who plays the more showy role of Ira Hayes steals the show though, in an absolutely heartbreaking performance. I was pullin for Nicholson to take best supporting actor in next year's oscars, but now i'll be damned if this dude doesn't get it.

'the beat that my heart skipped' - very good french film with duris puling off a wonferfully honest deniro-esque performance. he plays a parisian thug who evicts the poor for slum-lords (one of whom is his father), who then remembers a latent interest in playing the piano, and internal and external conflicts ensue: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0411270/

if a comparrison to an american actor need be, i would say that he resembled more of a young harvey keitel. the whole premise of the film was based on "fingers."

england,

i didn't go thru the entire thread, but this is what i've enjoyed recently:

atomic cafe

sakuran

color me kubrick

too tired to die

irreversible

arsene lupin (semi new french version, finally available on dvd)

simon-king of the witches

the hired (i think that was the title, might be the "hiring." it was a comp of short films for bmw. included wong kar wai and guy ritchie..etc.)

Atomic Cafe is a criminally underrated and underseen film. I'm really still not entirely sure why it appealed to me so much.

I think it's worth mentioning on it's own simply because it's so unlike most every other film on this list, in the sense that it's not a typical narrative, nor a typical documentary.

I'm horrible at explaining film.

Ha, it did seem a little unusual in the context of the rest of the discussion / films you mentioned, but hey, it's a good movie. Most everything I would've mentioned already has been. Between this and Fuuma's lists I have enough films to look for to last for months, more than that, even.
