how does california catch fire so often

americans tend to like to let trees and brush to grow, grow, and grow, for aesthetic purposes. this works fine and dandy until we have an extremely dry summer combined with a rainless winter/spring (which is often).

those summers usually end up killing trees/brush and drying them out. combined with the fact that there is no rain to moisten it up again, everything just ends up dead. it burns easier. winds fan out the fire due to a natural configuration of our geography...

who is lighting these fires (no mother nature)

Mike Davis wrote an interesting book about Socal, and he explains how every era blames different undesireables for setting the fires.

Reds, Mexicans, and of course, last time, Islamic terrorists.

LA is built on frigging desert scrubland. It's a natural tinderbox.
