How long should I soak them? Will it make a difference if they're folded?

You should be fine, as many people I know soak them folded in buckets or in the sink. Turn them inside out first and give them a long cold soak. Soak for at least 3 hours. An overnight soak is fine. If you want to remove a bit more starch then change the water a few times.

5 hours is the best! turn it inside out is an option. I used to do it, not everytime. they have not much difference. I worn jeans for over 10 years. Following is the 1955 model LVC(1996) that I worn. Sorry for I have not many pix of my jeans.

I was wondering why would you soak for more than a few minutes? I dont think it gets wetter, the longer you do it and I would think that you want to try to keep as much indigo as you can. Maybe there is something that I dont get.

It takes time for the denim to completely soak up the water and then it also takes time for the shrinking to take place. I also think most raw denim comes with a fair amount of starch in them and this tends to repel water. I'm not positive though.
