Agreed. And in my opinion, the water isn't decently clean enough till you're up that far anyways. My out of town friends always end up dragging me to Venice to 'swim'; shit is rank.

i feel that if you're visiting you'll want to spend the time in l.a. not waiting for a bus and doing what it is you plan on doing. i'd say spring for the car. it'll allow you to move about the city freely. otherwise you'll be at the mercy of the bus system.
