single payer healthcare is a possibilty. or maybe free market competition on a doctor vs. doctor or hospital vs. hospital basis. right now they have no performance incentives at all. the standard procedure is to give you about 15 minutes of attention (because they have to run twice as fast these days just to try to keep their business afloat), bill you, bill the insurance company, and refer you to someone else.

let them fight it out directly and set the prices rather than letting the insurance companies dominate the market. we are talking about hundreds of billions of dollars being pocketed by these companies. if all that money were made available to the healthcare providers themselves, i strongly suspect service would improve, care would improve, etc.

here, aside from pallative care or a better room, ted kennedy will get the same treatment as a regular joe.

and if you're leeching off medicaid, you can stay in the hospital for weeks while tax payers pick up the tab.

This sounds great as a theory, but doesn't pan out the same way all around. Ask me how I know. I can't automatically qualify for anything but high-risk medical insurance, because I've lived in and out of the country in the past 12 months, and once I get past that, I get rejected because I have a pre-existing condition. I am a U.S. citizen, but I'm basically too young and haven't worked more than 6 months of my life paying into social security, so I don't qualify for any social security benefits nor do I qualify for Medicaid.

I have paid about $6,000 out of pocket this year on medical expenses so far, and I have a $100,000 procedure coming up eventually that is not covered by any medical insurer in this country, in part or full.

I am earnestly thinking about trying to slip back into Australia in the near future and reassuming citizenship there, as I hadn't ever formally renounced it, where I can get the 100 G's paid in full by Aussie Medicaid.

I'm not in too great of a situation here, but I just imagine how bad it'd be for someone getting doors closed in their face, except not having any money, and from what I understand about this country, I imagine that most Americans would have a hard time paying the kind of bills I rack up, out of pocket. I had a standard battery of bloodwork done a month ago, 6 vials, over $1000 for those Labs alone. I've put in blood labs three times this year.

I have enough money to cover my bills, and go to good doctors, but I can't afford/receive expedited VIP service like a Ted Kennedy or like motherfucker. You can go to your general provider and get in, get your prescription for an antibiotic or steroid within the day, but specialist appointments for you and me and 99% of America, they take a month and half to get into at the small hospitals.

Well, what I see is a inherently flawed, broken health care system that doesn't take care of the truly ill. What use is that?

You can buy into the system, and that's wonderful that you were born white and middle class enough to not think much of that, but there's a good portion of this country who will someday go to the health care system that they too have paid into, only to be turned away, and be failed by it.

Nationalized health care systems don't harbor the world's best doctors, but they're not at the door turning sick people away either. Pick your poison.

Man, I am so ready for my own post-apocalyptic Mad Max gang. I've already got the property to live on, jeeps, motorcycles, plenty of guns, and an enormous liquor collection. Who wants to join? Registration is only open for female slaves at the moment.

i'd be lying if i said i didn't make this thread with some anticipation of your response. i'm a lil let down by the lack of insight/hope, but respect your respect of the impending doom.

Insight:

As long as the Muslim population remains around or under 2% in any given country, they will be for the most part regarded as a peace-loving minority, and not as a threat to other citizens. This is the case in:

United States -- Muslim 0.6%

Australia -- Muslim 1.5%

Canada -- Muslim 1.9%

China -- Muslim 1.8%

Italy -- Muslim 1.5%

Norway -- Muslim 1.8%

At 2% to 5%, they begin to proselytize from other ethnic minorities and disaffected groups, often with major recruiting from jails

and among street gangs. This is happening in:

Denmark -- Muslim 2%

Germany -- Muslim 3.7%

United Kingdom -- Muslim 2.7%

Spain -- Muslim 4%

Thailand -- Muslim 4.6%

From 5% on, they exercise an inordinate influence in proportion to their percentage of the population. For example, they will push for the introduction of halal (clean by Islamic standards) food, thereby securing food preparation jobs for Muslims. They will increase pressure on supermarket chains to feature halal on their shelves -- along with threats for failure to comply. This is occurring in:

France -- Muslim 8%

Philippines -- Muslim 5%

Sweden -- Muslim 5%

Switzerland -- Muslim 4.3%

The Netherlands -- Muslim 5.5%

Trinidad & Tobago -- Muslim 5.8%

At this point, they will work to get the ruling government to allow them to rule themselves (within their ghettos) under Sharia, the Islamic Law.

The ultimate goal of Islamists is to establish Sharia law over the entire world.

When Muslims approach 10% of the population, they tend to increase lawlessness as a means of complaint about their conditions. In Paris, we are already seeing car-burnings. Any non-Muslim action offends Islam, and results in uprisings and threats, such as in Amsterdam, with opposition to Mohammed cartoons and films about Islam. Such tensions are seen daily, particularly in Muslim sections, in:

Guyana -- Muslim 10%

India -- Muslim 13.4%

Israel -- Muslim 16%

Kenya -- Muslim 10%

Russia -- Muslim 15%

After reaching 20%, nations can expect hair-trigger rioting, jihad militia formations, sporadic killings, and the burnings of Christian churches and Jewish synagogues, such as in:

Ethiopia -- Muslim 32.8%

At 40%, nations experience widespread massacres, chronic terror attacks, and ongoing militia warfare, such as in:

Bosnia -- Muslim 40%

Chad -- Muslim 53.1%

Lebanon -- Muslim 59.7%

From 60%, nations experience unfettered persecution of non-believers of all other religions (including non-conforming Muslims), sporadic ethnic cleansing (genocide), use of Sharia Law as a weapon, and Jizya, the tax placed on infidels, such as in:

Albania -- Muslim 70%

Malaysia -- Muslim 60.4%

Qatar -- Muslim 77.5%

Sudan -- Muslim 70%

After 80%, expect daily intimidation and violent jihad, some State-run ethnic cleansing, and even some genocide, as these nations drive out the infidels, and move toward 100% Muslim, such as has been experienced and in some ways is on-going in:

Bangladesh -- Muslim 83%

Egypt -- Muslim 90%

Gaza -- Muslim 98.7%

Indonesia -- Muslim 86.1%

Iran -- Muslim 98%

Iraq -- Muslim 97%

Jordan -- Muslim 92%

Morocco -- Muslim 98.7%

Pakistan -- Muslim 97%

Palestine -- Muslim 99%

Syria -- Muslim 90%

Tajikistan -- Muslim 90%

Turkey -- Muslim 99.8%

United Arab Emirates -- Muslim 96%

100% will usher in the peace of 'Dar-es-Salaam' -- the Islamic House of Peace. Here there's supposed to be peace, because everybody is a Muslim, the Madrasses are the only schools, and the Koran is the only word, such as in:

Afghanistan -- Muslim 100%

Saudi Arabia -- Muslim 100%

Somalia -- Muslim 100%

Yemen -- Muslim 100%

Unfortunately, peace in never achieved, as in these 100% states the most radical Muslims intimidate and spew hatred, and satisfy their blood lust by killing less radical Muslims, for a variety of reasons.

- There will be race riots in all major cities in the US.

- New York will become the first wasteland; Kurt Russell will rule with an iron fist.

In all honesty though, America really is becoming a country of pussies. I completely understand that no one in the world respects us anymore.

We are loosening our policies on persecution of criminals, can't enforce our borders, are wasting billions on bullshit like 'economic stimulus packages' and 'prisoner wellbeing,' allowing too much dependency on foreign production and innovation, can't even fight wars the way they should be done (inhumanely but quickly), and generally, being way too compassionate. People are becoming complacent and lazy here. It's a mistake to think that as time progresses, the world becomes a happier and more harmonious place. Everyone will be gunning for the number one spot until the end of time. Thanks Jimmy Carter.

At the end of the day, all the redneck ranchers will be safe and sound living off their land, and all the liberal city-dwellers will cannibalize each other, starting with DataSupa. I'm still trying to figure out my best route out of LA when everything hits. Need to make it up to NorCal......hmmm. Submarine?

By the looks of this, we only have 11 years left:

I think we'll be fucked once the oil runs out. The saying is that money controls the world, but that is not the case -- oil controls every facet of our lives.

Stop and consider... nowadays you can load your car up with 4 friends along with your random luggage and drive them a mile down the road for roughly 20 or 30 cents. Now imagine the gasoline is gone - find me a man who would be willing to take you and your friends a mile for 20 or 30 cents. We have enjoyed an overabundance of cheap, high-yielding energy and as a result, prices were low and we consumed more of it.

also what about all the petrochemicals that we so dearly rely upon? There is no way that solar, nuclear, or wind power could support our lifestyle in its current state. I think that most people are oblivious to the fact that we will soon be forced to significantly lower our standards of living.

The beauty of the open market economy is that these things usually fix themselves.

Also, expectations play a big role in output growth.

So stop being so fucking pessimistic (Americans).

you are wrong about the free market.

DICTATORSHIP NOW!..... dot dawt d0t

the doctors, hospitals and patients are the ones getting dicked by insurance

insurance is able to get money from all three and still fuck with the patients by putting high school grads on phones to give the doctor a list of what they will let them do

we need a reform of health care but at the same time not risk losing doctors to big business or other fields

historic oil prices, sharply rising food costs, majorly slumping US economy (which i believe will never fix itself), middle eastern clashes, china and india being two of the most powerful countries, an entire morally corrupted generation growing up on myspace and facebook, and the yeah the global warming thing.

i ask you, how many years does civilization as we know it have left? 10? 20?

please, try keep this an intelligent discussion.

People were saying the same things in 1977.

We'll except for Global warming. No one gave a fuck about that back then and the kids were having their minds corrupted by FM Radio and smut on TV like "Soap".

Also replace India and China with Russia and Iran.

back then most naysayers gave us 20 years then BOOM!!!
