tim lehi and jef whitehead are my personal SF favorites, they work at www.blackhearttattoosf.com

but it totally depends on the style you're looking to get. i'm just really into oriental and american traditional tattooing rather than black/grey and super detailed stuff.

you can also never go wrong getting some work done by the legend, mr. don ed hardy at www.tattoocitysf.com. it's the dude that designed these lame mesh hats that britney spears, usher etc rock currently. however, he's a tattoo legend.

depends on your style, but in san francisco: check george campis, mike davis and henry lewis over at everlasting tattoo, jason kundell at artwork rebels. don't know if grime is still in the area, but it would be well worth finding out.

if you feel like venturing south of sf, i'd hit up adrian lee at new skool tattoo in san jose. before you head out to san francisco, i'd call the ink spots in advance to make sure they can schedule you in...

Jason Phillips <a href="http://miraclepony.com" target="_blank">http://miraclepony.com'>http://miraclepony.com"] <a href="http://miraclepony.com" target="_blank">http://miraclepony.com</a> is really good! He works out of Oakland [url=http://ftwtattoo.com/]http://ftwtattoo.com/ and SF. He has an extensive library and will really work for you unlike a lot of well known artists in the area that treat you like they are doing you a favor (Like Temple!)

Carpe Denim! (not the jean brand silly!)

perhaps i should have been more specific.

i'm looking to get detail of a Albrecht Durer (german renaissance painter/print maker) print, so it's all black and basically an intricate line drawing. the work in the portfolio's on most of the links posted tend to be really heavy/ bold/ more traditional, and my main concern is that they are able to do something light and intricate...

based on the names that are posted here, are there artist that you guys might find more suited for something lighter, perhaps less 'traditional'...

I second Black Heart! Tim and Jef are the best in the city. Tim is flawless and Jef has a distinct, yet violent, style. They both used to work for Ed Hardy, before he became the new Von Dutch...

Also, it's worth the short trip north to San Rafael (just past the Golden Gate Bridge) to Spider Murphy's ( http://www.spidermurphystattoo.com/ ), Heath and Theo are great.

I think Mike Giant opened up shop in New Mexico...
