Haircuts

Kinki Kappers, who I guess are considered pretty cutting edge. They're located everywhere nowadays but the Amsterdam locations are in the slightly less touristy parts of town: Utrechtsestraat, Overtoom and Haarlemmerstraat.

Toni & Guy is also worth mentioning I guess, though not as avant garde as Kinki. They're located in Magna Plaza near Dam square and in Van Baerlestraat near PC Hooftstraat.

Then there's the smaller independent salons that might be interesting: The tiny We Cut Heads at Waterlooplein and Tommy'z Toko who also houses an art gallery and occasionally throws amazing art/expo parties (Kersvers). Cyber Salon (Gravenstraat) just behind Dam square with its supersleek white interior offers 20-35% discount for students (not during weekends).

Hotels

Considering the hotel recommendations.. are you looking for bunk beds or sleeping next door to Madonna? The Amstel Hotel, The Grand, Seven One Seven and The Dylan are top notch if budget is not an issue. Then there's the supercool MIAUW, which is located right in the heart of the 9 Straatjes. Other options are the affordable Lloyd Hotel and the outstanding value-for-money College Hotel, although the latter two aren't in the city center. Same goes for Hotel Arena.

Oh and Amsterdam's newest 5-star hotel Amrath just opened its doors last summer. It's not completely finished yet - not all floors are open - but you won't notice any of that during your stay. They offer a 50% discount until december if I'm not mistaken - not a bad deal. The architecture is really something.. it's a fully restored monument according to the Amsterdam School style of architecture that was popular in the early 20th century. Even if you're not staying here it is well worth checking out. It's located only 100m from Central Station.

For peace and quiet, avoid the red light district (roughly the area between Zeedijk and Warmoesstraat).

There is this spot El Barrio, its right near the dampkring, and its a really cool spot. Its one part clothing (red clay, box fresh kinda stuff), one part art, and big time haircuts. Really nice people, and you can go there and get a couple fixes in at once.
