edit: I know he is very old and his peak was about 30~40 years ago, but this really pains me. It was only a couple of days ago that I went into a video store and recommended a couple of Bergman films to a friend.

I always found his movies very fascinating. One of my favorite writers and a great director. From the top of my head I can recommend:

That picture is interesting but makes him out to be so ugly, surprisingly enough it is often the one being used in "best directors" or famous XXth century artists photo books and articles.

My Antonioni recommendation is short but sweet:

* l'eclisse

* l'avventura

yes i've seen blow-up, la notte, zabriskie etc blabla... I do like them, I just don't like them enough
