mockumentary films

Recommended Posts

we all know and love This Is Spinal Tap

I just watched "The Incident at Loch Ness" (featuring Herzog in front of the camera as he fake-directs "The Enigma of Loch Ness" while being filmed for another mockumentary "Herzog in Wonderland")

Blair Witch kinda fits in this category, kinda sorta

as does 84 Charlie Mo-Pic (haven't seen this in a decade or more)

I am sure there are many more----------any fans of this genre?

Really excited to see the Herzog film.

I heard they recently came out with a "sequel" of sorts to Spinal Tap? Anyone see it?

F for Fake was interesting, but I figured out the twist before it happend, and it was one film that really make it worse if you knew the twist :(

I haven't seen much mockumentaries, but here's a couple recommendations (Although neither is really a mockumentary).

1. Sans soleil (Chris Marker, 1983): Many of you including ddml probably seen this, but too good a film not to mention.

2. Close-up (Abbas Kiarostami, 1990): A film that crosses the boundaries between documentary and narrative film. It's a re-enactment of a true story of a person who tried to scam a family by pretending to be a famous film director. The interesting thing is that the real people who were involved in the inicidents act as themselves, and the film is mixed with the actual footages taken in the police station and the court room etc. We never really find out where the reality begins and ends, and the abstract notion of what is real or not becomes irrelevant as we near the strangely moving finale. Also see Moment of Innocence by Mohsen Makhmalbaf, which is also a re-enactment of a true story between the director and a policeman he stabbed when he was young.

To sidetrack a bit, ddml have you seen Heart of Glass by Herzog? It's a film where he hypnotised all (or most) of the actors and filmed everyone under hypnosis. I saw it about a month ago, and it was really fascinating and discomforting. The commentary track on the DVD was as good as the film itself too.

i have seen Heart of Glass-----amazing film. makes me want to blow glass, actually. i haven't watched it w/ the commentary, but will make a point to do that. i love the coat that the seer wears as a cape.

and sans soleil is fantastic. i wish it was available on DVD in the US.

lordoak---american movie is a straight-up documentary film, as much as we want to believe the subjects are just acting

lots of great suggestions in this thread

I can't actually remember the coat. I don't pay too much attention to clothes when I'm watching films (blesphemy?).

sans soleil will be out on DVD in five days.

Expensive... but worth the money. I'm gonna order one soon.

incident at loch ness was great. michael karnow as the crytozoologist and his explaination of why he doesn't use detergent for laundry is priceless.

^ the commentary on that DVD is even better than the film, maybe

the director quickly runs out of things to talk about and the conceit is that he is bringing people off the street that have never seen the film to fill up the dead air; of course, they are watching the movie silent. brilliant!

good call, sybarite

Guest declasse

how about F.U.B.A.R. ?

i think it stands for fucked up beyond all recognition, army term or something.

it's about a canadian metalhead that has to remove a testicle. think of canadian redneck metalhead and you'll get the picture, quite funny...

I actually bought Coven on VHS as part of the first run, so it came signed with a bunch of press clips.

It's a weird middle ground, there's actually some really cool, creepy shit in it. But then there's some fuckin terrible, C- style horror shit in it. It just made me feel really bad for the guy, because he's just a budget kid with big ideas and no means to make it happen. At least he's making some movies instead of just sitting on his ass like most people.

was that man bites dog a ref. to best in show? thats a mockumentary.

No, man bites dog is an amazing French mockumentary about a hitman. The best part is when the crew runs into a rival hitman, with a whole crew making a documentary about him as well! Good shit

Highlights include our antihero receiving a .45 from his friends and family and then shooting one of the guests at his birthday party to see if it works, scaring an old woman to death on her couch so he can save ammunition, and a rant complaining about the difficulty of killing black nightwatchmen in the dark.

benoit is soooo charming, I find him so delightful when he explains how he noticed the box of sedocar ( is that right ) on the old ladys table and thus saves himself a bullet - good stuff. And how he explains how he hates killing kids, before adding - "you see, kids have no money, its without profit, a waist of my time" or something along those lines. Priceless.

Series 7: The Contenders..... thats a mockumentary right, I think its an ok film, could be done better but I like what its trying to say about TV/voyeurism (sp) yadadada
