Dressing "Camp"

I have to dress "Camp" or "Campy" or whatever for a party this weekend. As near as I can tell, there's about 10,000 different ways to dress "Camp" and I'm not sure which one to go for.

I'm wavering between a combination of "Cheesy Porno" and "70s Zombie Flick."

I need more fucking ideas.

If Camp is what you're after, then a true definition of Camp can be found in Susan Sontag's "Notes on Camp".

However, for a particularly authentic camp outfit, you should try something like Draq--notably Joan Crawford or Bette Davis. Also, anything that early Elton John wore as well as various French 18th century costumes are also considered camp.

i myself would go with a preppy style modelled after animal house or caddyshack. throw on some khakis and a cableknit with a solid pastel oxford underneath, some nicely parted blonde locks, a pretty tan and a tennis racket carried about and you'll be fine.

this would actually be considered ironic not camp. i second the elton john suggestion or go as 60's era adam west batman or even better, burt ward's robin.

not trying to be a prick or anything (sad that i feel the need to preface my threads as such), but what exactly is the difference between ironic and camp in this sense...i think this preppy style is definitively campy.

here you go. this one works.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camp_%28style%29.

vitamin nailed it with paul lynde and ed wood. its hard to describe really but its definately an exaggeration and tends to be more about attitude than a specific look/aesthetic.

so if servo dressed and acted like a female or flaming gay preppy it would be camp.

haha...umm once more, not being a dick but the difference between ironic and camp is not highlighted here whatsoever.

quoting wiki: Camp is an aesthetic in which something has appeal because of its bad taste or ironic value.

so basically camp and irony are synonymous.

and i dont think servo is actually the sack from wedding crashers, so it would still be ironic/camp for him to look as such...no?

edit edit: i'm gonna go with my first instinct and say that, for SuFu puproses, pretending to be a preppy jock/bro asshole would be perfectly campy, from a certain perspective.

edit: and then i read further and camp = crossdressing? i missed this development. my bad.

not to be a dick, but again, no.

camp may involve irony but irony isnt always campy.

they are not interchangable.

and yes it often involves crossdressing and very flamboyant behavior but again, thats not quite it either. its really about tone and execution.

concession: i suppose you could pull off camp dressed in the way you described but the look alone wouldnt do it. his behavior would/could make it campy.

perhaps i'm too drunk to get into this conversation as of right now. for me camp has always gone hand in hand with twee and b movies, or anything that you enjoy without taking too seriously. appealing because of their campy values...but the more i read, the more i think that the ultimate "camp" look for a sufu kid would be a uniqlo button up, some samurais, a pair of vans chukkas, and a headporter messenger bag.

Camp is a critical analysis and at the same time a big joke. Camp takes “something” (normally a social norm, object, phrase, or style) does a very acute analysis of what the “something” is then takes the “something” and presents it humorously. As a performance, camp is meant to be an illusion. A person being campy has a generalization they are intentionally making fun of or manipulating. Though camp is a joke it's also a very serious analysis done by people who are willing to make a joke out of themselves to prove a point. It's about being pretentious and contentious; It is a heterodox bouleversement all wrapped up in a tongue-in-cheek pose, which elicits shock and is meant to be offensive.

edit: i'm gonna stop arguing with my personal style hero.

I stopped at Ed Wood. I'm fucking going as Ed Wood.
