Ciao,

Anyone been to Milan recently? If so, do share your info on cool retail...preferably not the obvious luxury designer flagship stores and such. Thank you.

go to Corso di Porta Ticinese, you can find good shops there like Purple, Par 5, Frips, Stussy, Carhartt... there's also a slam jam store near to that avenue, with brands like acronym, visvim, head porter plus, prps etc. Then you should move to the beautiful 10 Corso Como (name and address of the shop), with galliano stuff, fred perry x cdg, margiela and such things. it's just wonderful, with great design names also. moreover if you come during this week there's milan furniture fair with a lot of collateral events and parties located all around the city in somenthing like 2-300 spots.

said this, i see you'r from a'dam...i'm going there for a week for the queensday next week...can you recommend me some good spots over there? not only shops, but also clubs, pubs, architectural spots, etc...thanks a lot, have a nice trip!!!

Grrrrrrrrazie!

Yeah, Slam Jam was already on my radar. I intend to see P.A.M.'s show there. But thanks for the other recommendations. I'll get back to you about Amsterdam later as I need to do tons of stuff before I'm off to Milano tomorrow.

Eigenlijk een stuk spannender dan ik dacht! Milan may have a solid reputation as business and high-fashion capital but there's a buoyant and young urban scene as well. Especially in the Porta Ticinese and Navigli areas you'll come across some cool stores and bars. As for designer outlets, I only checked out DMagazine on Via Montenapoleone which was pretty awful. Unfortunately I missed out on the 10 Corso Como outlet store but that doesn't mean YOU should ;-) Also check out the 10 Corso Como flagship...it stocks an amazing range of fashion, accessories, shoes and other wannahaves and it's as legendary as Colette, Paris. In short: Milan rocks!

my friend wanted to go to one of the bigger outlets outside the city and it sucked. huge Armani store, tourists going nuts in the Gucci store, bad food and thats about it

if you're looking for more avant garde fashion, check out Daad Dantone, they carry raf simons, rick owens, carol christian poell, attachment, yohji yamamoto, kiminiori morishita and others in their two locations. Antonioli has martin margiela, ann demeulemeester, label under construction, dries van noten etc.

thanks mike. I was planning to go to one of those massive outlet villages. But i guess thats just for the 65+ tourist that come by coach.

I'd love to go to that prada outlet. I want to get some dress shoes for work.

I visited Milan mid-spring this year. I also happened to have won a trip to Italy and a digi camera (actually my dad won, but offered me the prize instead) so will probably be returning some time soon. Here's a map I made that I thought might come handy. :D

the one outlet mall in mendrisio is ok too, 45 min bus ride (boards at some travel agency right in front of the castle sforza?) through beautiful town costs 13 euro and u get 5 swiss francs stub for chips at the casino attached to the mall, i got some stuff at the gucci outlet then took my 5 in chips and turned it into 80 swiss francs then left.

Just back from milano...

i love the city. its very old and has amazing buildings. if you want to go with a tight budget. try the king hotel on corso magenta. i paid 140 euro for 4 nights. and its a 5 minute walk from the Duomo and in the same street as Leo's "last supper" wall painting.

they have free bikes to discover the city. and imo is that the best way to go. (or by scooter)

Do's

Shopping... I've bougt some nice cheap stuff in there. Some dress shoes for 30 euro's

Foxtown in swiss. they have lots of shops. but as stated before. funny sizes. and you can imagine a D&G jacket still is 400 euros or so. I succeeded in the Energie, Levis and Adidas stores. they carry a good collection. But the bus ride to mendriso is great. you drive past the Como Lake. the sight is amazing from the front row of the dubble bus.

See the Monumental graveyard. It is a museum on its own. they have family graves that a from 1850 or so. no lines no tours. just a nice walk in a amazing surrounding.

Eat gellato.. its the best..

Eat at "traditionale restaurant" its located on one of the two canals in the south of milano. "RIpa di porta ticinese" that is best district i've been to to have a great evening. The only stupid thing is the gipsey children with their begging for money.

Dont's

Leo's last supper was sold out untill the end of the week. so if you want to go reserve a spot the day of arrival.

Leo's technical museum... boring boring boring..

i also went to 10 corso como but it was closed. and its nice to see the prices of booze in italy in the supermarket is about 60% of amsterdam's.

I am going to milano soon. Are there any shops carrying japanese brands like those from mindtrive.com? Individual sentiments, the virdi-anne etc. Or more shops other than those already mentioned? I don't really wanna go on a huge shopping spree from one shop to the next, just checkout those shops u don't find anywhere else in Europe.

Milan is pretty depressing.

for shopping, depending on what your style is, Antonioli is one of the only stores worth visiting along with corso como. D-magazine (3 stores) outlets can occasionally have gems, but the majority is rags. Daad Dantone is a trainwreck.

as for Hotels, Straf is pretty dope design wise, as centrally located as possible.

if you go to 10CC, theres a good pizzeria around the corner (viale pasubio) called Fabbricia.
