Circuit Bending

bt's latest this binary universe integrated circuit bending into a more melodic-driven sound. though not to the degree as those mentioned above, it's most definately worth a listen.

that's weird. i always thought of bt as a die-hard prog trancer but i guess he's incorporating other shit too now. go figure.

God Blast America in 2002 was the last and the greatest show in nyc for me. There was so much noise that owners of North Six were looking at the speakers and hoping they wont explode.

Then I started to see nyu kids buying everything from the noise section at other music. That store was never a good spot for that stuff but it was still disappearing like crazy. People bought every Merzbow album they could get and just bragged about during parties. This was the end for me.

I still go to No Fun Fest but skip the days with Wolf Eyes since they are pitchforks favorites. I think Carlos is doing a great service to fans by organizing a great festival each year but if he ever moves out of ny the scene might die.

Cult, I don't know if you ever went to No Fun Fest but some performances are really worth it. This year Merzbow and Keiji Haino are on the same day so attendance is mandatory :D

When I was 17, I ran my own noise label with a pal called 23 Virii. I released two albums of my own work under the name Onemancult, actually. We made a profit of five bucks after a year, and then college came along and we didn't have the time to keep it up.

Deutsch Nepal and Der Blutharsch were my highlights at GBA-

I've been to No Fun Fest every year, including the Wolf Eyes nights. I don't want to let a band's fan base ruin my listening experience, and despite the hype, I think Wolf Eyes are actually doing something right, unlike many other noise artists that became popular recently with hipster kids.

God damn us NYU kids though- I have to be thankful in some small part though, because for the most part, it has always seemed to me that the kids would buy these Merzbow records and then return them the very next day... it was always the American noise artists that these kids were into, and I've never quite understood it... is it a cultural thing, since a lot of these kids are from the Midwest, these bands are from the Midwest, so it makes more sense? I dunno.

The end for me was when I went to see To Live & Shave In LA at Tonic and Rat Bastard had to command all the little teenybopper hipsters to stand up and stop sitting down and reading books. Yes... reading books. That was an awesome fucking show, though.

EDIT: I also feel compelled to mention that you've probably seen me before because I stick out like a limp dick at a gangbang... I can honestly say that there were plenty of times when I was the only non-white person in the crowd at most shows. I think I saw a black guy at GBA, I'm not sure..

In that case there is a good chance I've seen you around. During GBA I spent most of my time with the German crowd and I don't really stand out with my shaved head and general hatred towards everyone else.

I never understood the love for only American artists. I got into noise when I was living in EU so I didn't even know most of them. When I moved to US and saw that I can buy most of the stuff by Merzbow, KK Null, Masonna, Zeni Geva, stuff that was very hard to come by back home. I didn't even look at American artists, as soon as I got my Merzbox I had enough stuff to listen for years.

I'm still a big fan of Der Blutharsch (I have a huge black flag with their logo in my room) and I still see them whenever I have a chance. I got into noise partially through neo folk (I listened to black metal in my early teens, moved to neofolk and later to strictly electronics) so DB and Death in June still hold a very special place in my heart.

Maybe we have a mini meetup at the No Fun and complain together how the scene went into shit while drinking massive amounts of alcohol.

Haha, sounds like a good plan on NFF.

I'm still really into black metal and neo/apocalyptic folk. Black metal less so, as it is

also being co-opted by sweater vest-wearing awkward kids who'd otherwise be listening to Belle and Sebastian. And, no one's really putting out anything worthwhile.

I was actually going to post a third time in a row last night asking if anyone was into

groups like Current 93, Der Blutharsch, Death In June, Sol Invictus, etc. It must be the 1/4 German in me that feels an affinity for all this stuff. Being a mutt rules.

I used to go to black metal shows in US but stopped few years ago. After you see metal festivals in the woods of Ukraine, with power generators, everyone sleeping in tents and girls tied to crosses with bleeding vagina the shows in Asbury Park, NJ just don't feel adequate.

Few of my closest friends are very much into black metal so I had a pleasure of traveling to shows all over eastern europe and scandinavia. A lot of these bands like to perform in old abandoned castles or just in the middle of nowhere. I've seen shows where real horse heads were used as decorations and where after party involved attempting to burn a church.

The scene is completely different in Europe. Most of the people I knew didn't wear black clothes, boots and leathers just for the shows. That's how they look all the time and black metal is a part of their lives. I've been to a wedding with a black metal band as the only entertainment :D

for real, i thought the same thing; but he stripped it all down for this binary universe. his latest is more brian eno than anything i've ever heard before from bt.

While I'm at it, who said they're sick of the noise scene? Cause I am too. It turned into this fucking hipstered out bullshit, girls in party dresses and guys in cardigans drinking red stripe beer and acting like they were into it... totally acting, faking it.

noise is supposed to be transgressive and evil and the last fucking frontier of sound, and pitchfork n' pals turned it into a scene. it sucks so much now.

i still listen to the stuff privately, but i've stopped going to shows, for the most part.

DO YOU SEE WHAT BROOKLYN AND L.A. DID TO LIGHTNING BOLT!l!!???

as far as i'm concerned, if you didn't see lightning bolt at ft. thunder, you didn't see lightning bolt....that statement also goes with 99% of the "noise bands" that arose out of that providence noise.

btw, i always thought most/all of the SERIOUS black metal bands out of europe/scandinavia were all pseudo facists as well....that's why i'm never seriously listened to them...

Some were pseudo fascists and some were real fascists but the issue was blown out of proportions. Most of the bands didn't push any politics into their songs.

It depends on your taste, and whether or not you can get into full on noise music.

Starting off easy and getting more and more abrasive:

20 Jazz Funk Greats

Assume Power Focus

Mission of Dead Souls

D.O.A. The Third & Final Report

Live Volume 1

The farthest I ever got with noise stuff was bands like The Locust, Ex Models and Wolf Eyes - but I guess these are some of the more "Pitchfork-friendly" bands associated with the genre.

I need to get 20 JAzz Funk Greats - I've known about that one - but never got around to it. You guys have convinced me that it's worth it - even if the noise thing is a little "over."

I'm really interested in bands like TG just because of the era they came out of - I think that the early experiemental stuff is so much more inspired. That's probably why I've always been able to get down with bands like CAN, who are like pioneers or something.
