ADVICE ME on my 5yo evisus

I have a pair of evisus bought 5 years ago. When I bought it, the dude told me to wear it a bit then wash it once to soften it up, so I did, I machine washed it cold with no detergent to soften it up and shrink it.

Since then, believe it or not, I have never washed it, because the same dude told me that eventually I will get fading in places with friction, and it'll look nice against the dark indigo. I have to admit, I don't wear it intensively like some ppl here, but my 5 year wear probably equals 1 year wear.

My question is, what effect will I get if I start washing it? By washing it once initially, is it harder to get those nice fading that some ppl here have achieved?

Thanks guys.

the initial "wash" you did can also pass for a 'cold soak' which is done to promote shrinking so that any future fading of creased areas doesnt shift after future washings. This shouldnt effect the quality of the fading all that much. 1 year of wear is a good time for a wash but that also depends on what you do in your jeans......

.....you should post some pics for better advice

Thanks for the quick reply. Prompted to charge my camera and take some pics straight away.

I think it might be slightly too bright. I think some areas near the pockets have a bit more fade than shown, but it basically is still quite dark, you only realise the colour have lighten when you compare it to other more hidden parts of the jean, like the selvedge.

As much as Evisu have become a cliche these days, this pair has the most details out of all the jeans I own. In fact, I find it hard to get jeans with this level of detail anymore, maybe I need to get into some of these other japanese brands mentioned on the forum.

wow...nice jeans...I like the cinchback buckle...From what I can see in the pics the wear is just starting to form (aside from the heel)...It seems as though these are baggy cut..and therefore fading wont be as pronounced..and will take longer to form...If I were you, I wouldnt wash them yet. If you want to get some whiskers and honeycombs forming I would suggest buying some spray on starch...spray them behind the knees and all over the crotch..then put them on while they are still wet from the starch...squat down every few minutes to induce creasing...then wear the crap out of them...all day everyday if possible.................but......thats just what i would do...theyre your jeans ;)

Just my 2 cents but from what I've seen from before/after pictures you will have to wear them alot longer before you'll see any significant result. Try starching the back of your knees a bit.

It might be the quality of the pictures though, but I'd say keep em a while before washing.

Edit: basically what Whodinihimself said

Thanks man for the quick reply. I liked the cinchback too when I bought them, they cost me an arm and a leg back in my student days. You are right, they are baggy fit. I do want that whiskers honeycomb effect, but it seems like it's never going to happen, because I have had these for so long. I'm guessing if I wash them now, I'm just going to get all around fading, right?

It's a shame, because I just don't have time to wear these all day everyday, wish I could.

Excuse me if this is stupid question, what does the starch do?

Thanks again for your advice man, it's invaluable, especially when none of my friends are into denim like I am, they don't get it. This forum is awesome.

starching makes the denim more rigid so that any wear you put on them is pronounced. there's a couple of starching threads in the encyclopedia sticky at the top of the boards, so that you can figure out all you need to know about that sticky mixture (and then some).

i'm in agreement that you should wear it more. if you don't wear it often you don't really need to wash it. :)

actually, it really makes sense that you (404) didn't know what starching was, looking at the photos of your 5 y.o. evisus. it's not too late, try it out, see what happens. and check out other people's jeans from threads like these and compare yours to them. that's my rec.
