I'm going to Seattle next week for the first time.

I'd like to know

1) good shopping spots (besides the ones listed on the superfuture main page)

2) good spots for japanese food

3) What are the options for transportation?

Is seattle a "walking city" like NY and SF?

Subways?

Any help will be appreciated.

Okay... for Japanese food within easy access to downtown, I'd recommend checking out these two places in the International District.

Maneki on 6th just north of Jackson St has great sushi and is fairly traditional.

Maekawa just a few blocks south on 6th and King is one of my favorite cheap eats spots in Seattle. It's more of an izakaya with a small bar and serves food late. Lots of Japanese visitors seem to know about this place.

Finally, Hana Sushi on Broadway between E. Thomas and E. John is also a good spot for affordable sushi.

Hit the Pike/Pine neighborhood for bars, other eats, and a all around good time.

have fun!

Oh yeah... transportation!

Seattle is a very walkable city. We don't have a subway, but our bus system is pretty good. You can easily walk from downtown to just about anyplace you'd want to see it town. Capitol Hill and the Pike/Pine area mentioned earlier are due east (up hill) from the downtown core shopping area. The International District and Pioneer Sq. (more bars) are south towards the stadiums. Belltown (bar, eats and chachis) are north and past that is Queen Anne. If you want to go out to the U-District, Fremont or Ballard, take a bus from downtown.

yes. very walkable. but youll be riding a bus more than you would in san francisco. parking sucks there, like in most cities, so bus is probably the best.

i left before they made a decision on the monorail. what happened?

and i always ate at dicks. they dont serve japanese food there, but heart attacks are a very american way to die.
