I was looking at looms on ebay and got interested in weaving fabric. Does anyone know if these smaller looms such as this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=8286230170 would be able to produce denim? just throwing it out there to see if any of ya'll know.

alright, i was doing some looking around on wikipedia and some other places. I think i'm figuring some things out. Correct me if i'm wrong:

A rigid heddle loom is a type of loom that has 2 harnesses or shafts. A loom with only two harnesses is only capable of producing a "plain weave", which means that the warp and weft threads are 1:1. To make a twill fabric, like denim, there needs to be at least a 2:1 ratio, which will give the diagonal pattern. With four harnesses, there can be three sets of warp threads up and one set down. As the weft makes passes, one harness is moved up and another is moved down, always having 3 up and 1 down.

This is probably closer to what i would need to make denim:

that's all for now, i'm back to digging for more information. any input would be great.

  • 1 year later...

this is very intriguing. when i get older, i want to grow some cotton, spinn it myself by hand, grow my own indigo plants for sukumo dye, and make my own jeans from dead scratch(hank-dipped like 30 times)woven by myself on my own 4-harness loom, on a union special... itll take me forever, but i wont sell them, ill give them away to selected heads who will appreciate them . itll keep me occupied in my golden years, and the grandkids out of my hair, cause ill have their little asses spinning, and dipping yarn...

do i hear another project coming up?

Awesome!

Whatever it is, I'm in!

I can sew and have made jeans before!!!

edit: I guess Chicken meant, a personal project for Miz, while I was thinking something along the lines of him making denim at home and several Sufu handy people making jeans out of it. Now that would be a project I'd have to be part of...
