Japanese Kaihara Denim - quality difference between manufacturers that use this denim

Hi guys, in my own research over the net on information on brands and different types of dry denim available, I have been wondering about the different types of denim and quality.

I have noticed that though there are brands that use japanese kaihara denim and are given great respect for their jeans, there are those brands that also use kaihara denim but are given less.

I have bought a few pairs of Jeans, two Uniqlo Made in Japan Selvage Jeans (Black and Dark Blue), and one pair of Nudie Big Bengt Red Selvage Jeans. All of the Uniqlo jeans are All made in Japan, using Kaihara Denim, and the Nudie jeans I got also uses Kaihara denim, but "made in italy".

Other japanese brands use kaihara denim and are sold for more than uniqlo and nudie jeans. They are also said to be "better quality denim" - I have seen people say that the Uniqlo selvage jeans "are not the best quality, I know, but still, great for the price". And for Nudies, some people just don't like their cuts and orange thread, but if we talk about the quality of the denim itself, it seems that people do get much more tear and ripping in the wearing process compared to other jeans (especially in the crotch area).

If they all use kaihara denim, how is it that the quality differs?

One idea I got is that the dying process is different, and so they don't fade as well or fade faster (Nudies seem to be designed for you so you can fade them fast, I have seen). But I can't see how there is such a large difference. Another thought was that there are different grades in quality of the denim made in the Kaihara mill.

Any thoughts, or actual knowledge on this?

Kaihara is a huge mill so, yes, they produce denim of every shade of quality. There are a huge number of variables, from the denim, the dips, the spinning.... it's endless.

However, you don't always pay for what you get. According to ringring, Kaihara's denim for the first uniqlo selvage jeans was very good quality, exactly what you might get on jeans costing many times the price.

no.. i meant i looked over websites at stores and brands, "research" on jeans meaning i tried to look around for differences on denim quality but there wasnt much i could find on the kaihara mill.

anyway. so theres not easy way to finding out what is really better? I guess it comes with experience and trust on the brand.

alright alright. i searched on this site for "kaihara" and "kaihara denim" there was no thread for it so i thought it might be good to start a thread on it.

I did search and did read some of them, but i wanted to be specific on the jeans that I had as well. Like the nudies ripping and the cheaper uniqlo jeans.

I've worn several Nudie jeans for extended periods of time without any issues. The ripping could be the individual and not the denim. If your a bike messenger riding in your jeans everyday you'll get different results than someone who sits in an office all day.

in terms of crotch tears, the fabric does play a part, but also keep in mind the fit of the jean, further overdyeing on the fabric, the construction as well as the body structure of the person wearing it. It usually cannot always be blamed on the fabric alone. Especially since nudie use different fabrics on different cuts
