the downtown area is relatively small, but the rest of the city is rather large and diverse so you would have to be a bit more specific as to what youre looking for

there are rich, gay, republican, liberal, ghetto, yuppy, salty, fucked up neighborhoods and people all around here but it seems like you have a romanticized idea at the moment

if you're seriously considering it then i would recommend to just make a visit out here

also think about the surroundings areas 30 minutes outside the city as there are mountains, national forests, etc if that's your thing

well i'm not gay or rich so thats not really what i'd be looking for, liberal whatever, i don't really care. what's downtown like? whats a sufu type of area, no way of saying that without sounding like a tool. people into this kind of fashion and so on, people that shop at blackbird and so on.

not sure what a sufu type area is, but blackbird isnt in downtown seattle by any means...it's in ballard which is a neighborhood a couple miles out and is basically all by itself in terms of high end retail

though you will certainly find hipsters there

in downtown there's a barneys (a relatively small selection), a mario's (high end italian brands), a nordstrom, a nordstrom rack, butch blum (carries high end luxury apparel like suits + yohji), american apparel, and vintage/consignment shops...that's basically it for interesting menswear

i think you would like http://21arrondissement.blogspot.com/, nearly everyone on it is wearing a blackbird/sufu brand, but if you think there is a highly concentrated area of like minded people that dress in robert geller and nom de guerre in seattle, you will be disappointed.

in my experience, the type of people that wear head to toe blackbird around here are most likely in the red

Second the rec to visit.

Moved out here last year, going from NYC to an Eastside suburb of Seattle. The weather is crazy unpredictable. That's about the only constant. Came out west looking for green and quiet.

There are lots of transplants in the area, and the locals will let you know it. It's a passive aggressive provincialism. On the whole, I was pleasantly surprised by the level and quality of produce and ingredients available to me as a cook. As for lady clothing, it's a bit disappointing.

Most restaurants border on mediocre, but I was pretty spoiled. Have only found two restaurants I willingly seek.

You'd probably want to look near Wallingford/UW area. I found Ballard and Fremont irritating, but I'm just being grouchy.

What vintage/consignment stores are around here?

Anyone know of a good hair salon in the seattle or eastside areas?

I'm looking for someone that knows how to work with asian hair; layers and something unique.

Best haircut i ever got was in taiwan, but the shape is kinda fading from a bunch of mediocre cuts.

Much appreciated, Thanks.

There is a shop in downtown Seattle called Atsui, Tokyo. They sell only Japanese brands, so if you are on the slimmer side the stuff there fits well.

If you are into snow sports, there are plenty of options around Seattle. Also, Vancouver BC is just a few hours drive away.

Just have to get used to the incessant rain...

I realise i'm digging up a fairly old thread but i'm heading to seattle this weekend only for the day so no time really to check out night stuff. (i've been before and done the touristy stuff) My roommate really wants to go eat at todai. Anyone been? What you reckon?

So yeah in a nutshell just going because my roommate wants to do some shopping so i decided to tag along. She really wants to go to the outlet mall just over the border but that stuff isn't really for me. So I won't have much time in downtown but I went through all the pages and it appears Blackbird is a must. I had a look at the Atsui Tokyo site and it seemed pretty good and is downtown so i'll check it out. Also Kuhlman, Ian, Polite Society. I won't have much time so what do you guys suggest? I have to go to Snowboard Connection though, gotta buy a snowboard bag so i can take it home. Does anyone know if hellers cafe is still open and if it's got some good stuff?

Thanks.

I would go to Shiros instead of Todai, but theres nothing wrong with both! Kuhlman is boring unless you like Fred Perry and getting your jeans ruined. Atsui isnt my thing, and Polite Society is straight up yuppie status. Stick with Blackbird.

Atsui is okay if you want to dress like Japanese people from the countryside

Atsui is better in person. last time i was there they had plenty of PBJ, SC, KMW (not my favorite, but nice denim all the same), and some denime (which likely wont be back as another store may have locked this one up)

Yo Sufu,

I'm going to Seattle from March 19 - 28. What can you guys recommend? I'll definitely be checking out the Ballard area (Blackbird), but I want to know what else there is to do. Music, bars, more shopping, good/cheap eats, Art/photography galleries or museums too. Anything you guys can point out would be great.

If there's already another Seattle thread, please point me in the right direction. I searched and didn't find anything. Thanks.

I'd make an appointment with Blue Owl if you can get out of the city (formerly Atsui Tokyo, lots of Japanese brands exclusive to them as well as PBJ, SC, KMW, 3W and some other denims)

If you go to Blackbird and are into workwear (or just want to spend some time), their workwear-specific shop The Field House is just down the street

Jack Straw is the only place in Seattle for a number of brands (AnnD, CdG, Yohji)

Neiman Marcus has the standard Neiman fare but if you're coming from a place with crappy shopping it could be worth a visit

Nordstrom Flagship (downtown) has a bunch of stuff you won't find in other Nordstroms (Paul Smith, Margiela, Rag & Bone [although this is spreading to other stores], DSquared, Marni, Michael Bastian, a few others)

J.Gilbert is the only other Alden stockist (aside from Blackbird, but their markups aren't as high), and Alden of Carmel is based here but there's no physical location

Go to Ballard on a Sunday to check out their farmer's market, good food and The Field Shop has random mini-classes on Sundays (15 slots only)
