NYC trip report, the sequel

I wanted to give my opinions on some stores in manhatten, namely ones that I missed last year because I ran out of time...

steven alan- lives up to expectations. well balanced for female and male clothing. my gf noticed that the jewelry assortment was excellent. the help was very friendly, and were not overbearing. what was left of the sale stuff was deeply discounted. i took advantage of this to get an engineered garment button down, and a blue spruce hoody (they run tight, so went up a size).

number nine- don't know, it was too far out there, and needed to stay on schedule. next time.

cloak- i like their stuff, i really do. but nothing i needed from them at the time. the store kind of seems like a waste of time, space, and money for cloak, because their collection is so small. it takes 30 seconds to scan the entire collection.

ideya- best brunch in the city. we always go there.

uni-qlo- hey everybody, it's the japanese old navy! anyway, i was most impressed with the design and quality of the goods in this store. it is a definite stop to pick up affordable wardrobe fillers. i can see undergrads chewing this place up. and if it spread all across the land, would put old navy and the gap out of business.

odin- i like what they are doing. didn't realize that it was inspired by japanese fashion sense. the store was smaller than I expected. they could use more brands of jeans. what they had was good, but I didn't find anything. passed on some eng. garm. pants on sale. i think they need to drop rogues gallery; those shirts are overpriced, and remind me too much of barking irons.

famous friends- man, what a walk. again, wasn't expecting the whole japanese thing, or the small size. however, great selection for what they had. everything seemed to be on sale. pretty much all things rogan, 5ep, or any other hot denim at the moment. didn't like to see acne jeans. that is the stupidest name for clothes. again, gf noticed great jewelry selection. picked up a 5EP western shirt on sale.

giant robot- love this place. makes you realize how good their website is because it's like you are looking at it when you walk around. one of the best places for vinyl toys, and all things emerging art. oh yeah, and it was established that the theme of our tour today was japanese.

cynthia rowley- she gave me odin, so i gave her cynthia. i sense that cynthia will delve into menswear. i don't know, i just feel it.

magnolia- had to stop for cupcakes to relive lazy sunday. they are like krispy creme; you have to eat them fresh off of the pan, and you can only eat one. all and all, don't see the draw.

jeff soto opening in chelsea- this man is the next tim biskup and gary baseman. great stuff, although i couldn't afford it. it got crowded fast, and we felt displaced by the bring-your-own-pbr hipster crowd.

pop burger- now this was a great dinner for a -30 degree night. we did take out, and i was impressed by the onion rings and fries. the burgers were what white castle probably aspired to be.

Seems like you and your girl had fun, good to hear that. I swear I get lost all the time getting to Number Nine, eventho it's my fav store at the moment. You should have tried something at Cloak, just to experience the revolving secret dressing room. Yup Rogues Gallery is not that special, they however do the silkscreening for Cloak's shirts.

Go there when its sale, tho that would be a longer wait. They do a 40% off. The store is still pretty neat just to see and experience. It's like in the middle of nowhere. I went there with a girl and she actually likes some of the stuff. There are sizes/styles that a girl can fit and rock too.

Had my own NYC trip. Hit up Nom De Guerre and Atrium, along with a bunch of other Soho shops. A funny thing happened at Nom De Guerre; a guy walks in and asks, "What's the name of this store?" And the owner(I think he was the owner) tells him, and the guy says, "Is that French?" Pretty funny scene, I bet it must happen a half dozen times a day, what with this store being at the bottom of an unmarked staircase at the corner of Broadway and Bleecker. Cool store, though, lots of the usual suspects, APC (I like the new military style jacket), Engineered Garments (actually not really feeling this brand as much as i think I should. The idea is great, but I only liked a couple of the many items they had), Maharishi, Spruce, Wings and Horns, rag and bone, etc. Upstairs they had nice NDG clothing, the denim actually looked spectacular, but I didn't try any on.

We went across the street to Atrium, which is a pretty fun store. It's big and loud, with a young and good looking group of kids working there folding clothes constantly. The clothing is definitely hit and miss there, and in my opinion mostly misses, but I have conservative tastes. Saw my first nudies with vegetable indigo (for $500[!]) which looked really cool, but holy crap. They also had Kicking Mule Workshop jeans which mauro from denimbar mentioned on sf before it crashed, 5ep (on sale, lots of straight one washes for 169), and earnest sewn. I was also impressed with the barking iron tees. One of them had an old Boss Hogg caricature from the 1860s, which kind of blew me away. Very cool prints.

yeah, i'm not a big fan of atrium at all. they don't have much good stuff at the store. i didn't see any of the 5ep's there last time, but did see the overly hyped/crappy bluebloods on basically clearance ($59.99).

also found out steven alan sold out of the spruce hoodies that were on sale. bummer.

Keep an eye out for the new spring ones which are made from french terry instead of combed fleece. Just as heavyweight and thick as the fall season, though.

The dark purple/plum color is awesome.

If you like Atrium you should go to Lounge next time. They carry a mix of brands like Atrium, but more pm.

The cupcakes at Magnolia aren't anything special. I wonder where the hype for them start. I know in a episode of Sex & the City they were in Magnolia, but were they eating cupcakes? Next time get the pumpkin cheesecake.

Yeah, the rack of blue bloods is still there. I agree, they don't have much good stuff there, but I liked the vibe, or at least the music they were playing (80s hip hop at the time)

The 5eps were on the bottom shelf of a table in front of the rack of blue bloods. It wasn't hard for me to find, since I'm basically keeping my eyes open only for dark denim.

Hey Giant Reptile

Went there Nov 05, had a mental time saw the Artic Monkeys and Ryan Adams, anyhow shops:

Steven Alan - disappointed, not what I expected.

Number Nine - ditto

Cloak - ditto

Odin - good shop was impressed, good pieces unlike the rest of New York

Famous Friends - Richard is cool, shop is cool, good one off pieces but felt there wasn't anything truly unque.

Nomme De Guerre - pish selection reminds me of Jones in London - hit or miss - and it was definitely MISS

Atrium - cattle market for mass produced jeans - still wonder how prps and the like want to keep exclusive when on the shelves in here - dreadful shop.....

Alife - mis

i'm surprised to hear that you were disappointed with steven alan, because that was one of my favorites. i got a lot of flack for it, but i also liked barney's (my review is in original trip report). i'm with you on atrium. glad you liked famous friends, because they have a good thing going, albeit being so damn far away.

GR

It wasn't that I didn't find Steven Alan of interest it was just didn't have adiverse range of clothing and moreover they carried very similar ranges and labels to the department stores.

I genuinely feel you get a better more broad range of labels (and styles) in the UK.

I ended up buying a pair of PRPSs, and a Paul Smith Jacket and Shirt - say no more!!!

Should of gone to London......

By the way, its called Kid Robot, not Giant Robot.

How are you gonna say "best brunch in New York" either. You don't even live there! How would you know?

hey asshole. i know the difference between giant robot and kid robot. giant robot is on 9th and kid robot is near soho. and what's wrong with saying ideya is the best brunch without living there. i'm entitled to my opinion. what a moron you are.
