i'm aware that this is cut shorter from the traditional fishtail. kind of confused because it pretty much fits like a field jacket, which it replaces this season, correct..?

jacket looks fine, definitely do not size up (since as others have said the sleeves would be way too long). and yeah the cut / length looks similar to prior field jackets.

how thick is this bad boy? will it be suitable for more autumn weather ie not freezing or is it too thick for that?

i just bought a new winter coat so no point getting the timberline if its gonna be too thick

It's flannel lined but not too thick. I've been wearing one in ~65 degree weather and it's perfect.
