Embellishing a pair of jeans

Thanks to the advice of everyone here, I went out and bought APCS, Acne, and Earnest Sewn jeans which I love. The downside is I'm left with several pairs of old jeans that quite frankly, look boring to me now.

Prime example is a pair of 1969 jeans I bought from Gap on sale about a month back. Nice denim, decent enough fit, dirt cheap, etc. Nothing wrong with them, but no flair or real reason to wear them. What I would like to do is embellish them somehow, add some patches, stiching on the pockets, sew some color around the front pockets, etc. Anything to make them more interesting. It's a no lose game: I'm pretty much never going to wear them so if I mess up, no loss.

Has anyone here done anything like this before? I saw pics of how to do this on a website for japenese denim but I don't remember which one.

If your going to do it, check out some pics first. The placement/color of patches and the like can look really strange when done wrong, especially when the jeans look too new for mending. I really like the look of (I think it is called darning), where the holes are sewed over with a piece of denim on the inside of the hole.

I like the way a band patch or some such looks thrown on the ass pocket with contrast hand stitching. Besides that, just wear 'em when you're doing housework, going to the beach, anything active like that. Eventually you'll beat the shit out of them to a point where they'll either fall apart or look awesome.

sandpaper. Rub the hell out of edges (pockets, waist band, bottoms, beltloops etc...) so they start to fray naturally....and do the same to the rest of the denim til u get the look u want. it works, makes em look alot more authentic, and it makes em alot softer too. DO IT!
