The Dismemberment Plan - Emergency & I

Enon - High Society

Spoon - A Series Of Sneaks

Yo La Tengo - I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One

Manitoba - Up In Flames

The Figurines - Skeleton

The Microphones - The Glow, Pt. 2

The Microphones - Mt. Eerie

Les Savy Fav - The Cat And The Cobra

The Shins - Oh, Inverted World

Broken Social Scene - You Forgot It In People

Red House Painters - Songs For A Blue Guitar

Sufjan Stevens - Michigan

Deerhoof - Apple O'

The Notwist - Neon Golden

Destroyer - Your Blues

The Unicorns - Who Will Cut Our Hair When We're Gone?

...and you're set. These are all the necessaries that came off the top of my head.

This is one of the best "Indie Starter Lists" I've ever seen. Really hitting a lot of bases, and you could take any of those bands and pretty easily find bands "like" them to start figuring out sounds / labels / places to look for shit you'll like.

great list. I'm torn here. I really feel there is 2 periods of "indie rock" USA. basically it breaks down to the emo divide. You named everything after the emo divide.

pre-emo divide

superchunk - come pick me up, foolish, basically everything. I'm still actually shocked this band never comes up on these lists. obviously they never re-invented the wheel, but I'd easily say the state of "indie" music would be half the genre of what it is today if it weren't for this band/mac/merge.

pavement - crooked rain

polvo- Today's Active Lifestyles

swirlies - they spent their ....salons

olivia tremor control

et. al.

matador circa 92-96 or so was one of those labels you could blindly buy any album and be satisfied. same with merge.

ok, let's see if i can add something that hasn't already been said. with all the stuff up already it won't be easy. i'm just going to throw out bands because i'm too lazy to provide album titles. i'll try my best to stay on stuff that's along the lines of cyhsy and MM, but some of these are just bands that i like.

someone still loves you boris yeltsin

the monolith

newer belle and sebastian (life pursuit/dear catastrophe waitress. the older stuff is more chamber pop)

brendan benson

british sea power

clinic

boy least likely (very poppy, though)

impossible shapes

the little ones

the quiet ones (noticing a trend?)

liars

menomena

ratatat

murder by death

the natural history

neutral milk hotel (absolutely essential. especially "in the aeroplane over the sea")

pixies (not so much indie anymore, but so damn good)

the ponys

q and not u

rilo kiley

sondre lerche

the spinto band (fantastic indie pop)

tv on the radio

two gallants

the walkmen

the velvet teen

xiu xiu

yes, i did just scroll through my iTunes, as evidenced by the loosely alphabetical order. i've left out anything mentioned earlier (at least i tried to), but i've got to voice my support of the new pornographers, spoon, and sufjan (though illinois is essential and not previously mentioned).

hope this helps. i work at a radio station right now so if you want more info i have access to an enormous amount of music. not to brag, but it is fantastic.

little ones are ex- Sunday's Best. Seen them 2x so far, they're good for what they are, but they'll never be able to rip off that police melody perfectly again.

i hate the liars. i think they suck. all part of that 2003 brooklyn hype train that went nowhere. to me they seem like they try a little too hard. i haven't heard the 2nd album but that 1st one was terrible.

For off the top of your head, that's pretty good. Lots of contemporary acts, but if you want to get to the roots of indie, if you want to make sense out of any of the indie-pop indie-rock indie-tronic indie art rock bands that are playing now:

The Velvet Underground - Any album, really.

Guided By Voices - Bee Thousand

Sonic Youth - Daydream Nation

Sleater-Kinney - Dig Me Out

Royal Trux - Accelerator

Slint - Spiderland

The Smiths - The Smiths (their guitarist is on Modest Mouse now, you might notice. If you want to better hear johnny marr's contribution to We Were Dead, give this record a listen)

Hüsker Dü - New Day Rising

Pavement - Slanted and Enchanted

Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs

The Jesus, Mary and Chain - Psychocandy

Labels you should look up and down their catalogues and see if you like anything:

Fat Cat

Kill Rock Stars

Sub Pop

Deep Elm

Vicious Pop (shameless hometown plug, sorry)

No Idea

Arts & Crafts

Merge

Paw Tracks

Dischord

Fat Wreck Chords

Asthmatic Kitty

Epitaph

DFA

Domino

Saddle Creek

Fat Possum

Righteous Babe

Constellations

Mute (they still release a lot of "indie" shit, despited being eaten by EMI in 2002)

Drag City

There are always other artists and labels one can mention, i know i'm not covering every base, but those are to the best of my knowledge and of my own collection.

You've shit talked me in almost every single thread i've posted in, Carl. i really don't see what all the hate is for. Maybe i worded my post badly, but those artists have an influence and a bearing on what's being released today, wouldn't you agree?

the spinto band (fantastic indie pop)

Came in to post that, so definitely seconded. Saw them open for We Are Scientists and Art Brut back in Toronto last year and they had me instantly.

Lots of good ones named in here, I noticed Wolf Parade on the first page. If you like them, definitely track down Sunset Rubdown. One of WP's member's side-project, just as good. Here's a few more I don't think I saw listed:

Animal Collective

Colour Revolt

Cursive

Diableros

Fiery Furnaces

Gomez

Great Lake Swimmers (very relaxed, though)

Minus The Bear

Neva Dinova

Polyphonic Spree

Stars

  • 3 weeks later...

being indie is really funny isnt it

you either belong in the pitchfork crowd which arguably is not indie anymore

but on the other hand you stand listening to these really strange 'real' indie bands that has like demos and shit and frankly they sound really really shit and the recording quality etc. is real shit

so basically, to be indie, you either 1) stop being indie and listen to pitchfork et a. or 2) litsen to shit music
