“The generic man doesn’t need branding and logos to make him feel confident or stylish.

He understand the significance of quality construction and clean, simple, refined lines.

The generic man is confident enough in himself to accept simplicity.

Originally founded in 1997 in a NYC loft by Kevin Carney, the generic man collection came about in 2006, as Brandon Day and Kevin Carney began what they call ‘a case study in adultism’, a journey to define what it means to be an ‘adult’ these days. Through a process of research, experience and discussion ‘the generic man’ lifestyle of the ‘Newdult’ took shape.

The Newdult is tiring of streetwear and the high price of luxury. In response, ‘the generic man’ has created thoughtfully priced luxury for this new modern adult.â€

Impressive SS 09 footwear by The Generic Man.

I wasn't that fond of this brand when they first started up. They paled in comparison with the models CP was coming out with at the time, I think. But now, as CP has proven it is no longer capable of producing desirable footwear, Generic Man is actually making some more appealing stuff.

I can only comment on the design however; I haven't handled any of these in person. Anyone know what the quality is comparable to?

the first season was like CP quality, typical of a boutique sneaker. I just didn't really like the silhouette of the Sportsman in person so I got rid of mine.

Now that they have that UO diffusion line, they're done. GM never really sold that well anyway.

What killed the Generic Man:

-the toeboxes were low but hideously wide and round on the Sportsman hi, their bread and butter shoe. The top silhouette makes it look like you have paddles on your feet.

-they never covered any basic colorways (how hard is it to make a solid white sneaker?) and went for all these outlandish colorways from the get go, teal, gold sparkle in the first season, that caviar leather, and they made all those laceless deconstructed leather laceups and neglected the sneakers so they were never in any one game solidly

They're made in Spain or Portugal, by the way, Same sole mold as those other shoes but made elsewhere for cheaper obviously. In reality, it's only CP, MMM, Raf by, Y's, Brato, Kenneth Cole, and a few others using that exact sole... the others like Lanvin, Pierre Hardy, they look similar but are not the same.
