Confusingly in the UK a public school is a sort of private school, generally an old and jokes one e.g. Eton. A private school will generally have been set up more recently, be a bit crap, and you still gotta pay. If you are a lumpenprole or your parents are middle class but tight or have a "class conscience" you go to a state school, which is free.

A special set of state schools are grammer schools, which are state, hence free, but selective, so you've got to pass the exams/interview/live nearby. These schools exist to allow middle class people with a "class conscience" to get their children a decent education away from lower class children, without having to send them to public school, with its unwelcome connotations of elitism.

I went to a fun public day school in north london. Had to wear a blazer up until age 17, when I wore a suit. There were no girls, except for the ladies school down the road ("whores on the hill"). Consequently it was a bastion of homoeroticism (sadly now defunct as they've started letting girls in).

The intake was a heady mixture of the sons of rich arabs, mad iranians, african dictators, famous authors, famous hairdressers, jews, the excessively rich and of course traditional white middle class strivers. I loved it and still hang out with my mates from there.

I went to a public school. The one opportunity I got to go to a private school, I skipped because I'd already settled in to 5 years of my high school.

Our uniform was shit.

Most annoying thing was that every other member of my family went to private school, only reason why I didn't go was because my rents decided to get divorced and my mom couldn't afford to put 3 kids through at the time. 3 years later my dad foots the bill for my younger bro after my older bro and sis finish and I'm left in the public system for a few more years. Not like it matters, I'm still a medic.

my parents gave me the choice of public or private when it was time for high school. chose to go public because private school had gay uniforms and it was for nerds.

got to year 10 and realised public is completely shit and full of pikey's/trailer trash/bogans (the one i was at anyway). so changed to private school.

private = a million times better. hotter chicks, better parties, and the uniforms for girls were horny as. stockings etc in winter and 1 piece potato sacks in summer. all we did all day in summer was sit around waiting to spy a blue moon (glimpse of knickers). those were the days.
