yeah I know what you mean. I appologize if I came off like some elitist fashion snob or something. My point was, in a market thats supersaturated, especially now, with tshirt lines..you gotta have something that makes you stand out from the rest. Johnny cupcakes has a marketable logo and some nifty designs, designing is a hard thing I know, but if you can address the problems of simplicity and cleanliness and still have a good design I think you'll be on the right track to getting some nice shit out.

And i know cut and sew is hard stuff to get into, but it would be refreshing to see a post of a new company and see something other than tshirts.

good luck.

and get a real domain! that's important. they're pretty cheap too. i pay 10.00/month for mine. try www.servercentral.net

--- Original message by andewhall on Oct 2, 2005 03:17 PM

sorry but anyone jumping on a forum they dont talk on and making 5 or 6 random posts in random threads about some shitty "company" for exposure and advertisement isnt going to get a very neighbourly response from me. this is a message board, not a billboard.

did you not catch the sarcasm?!

dude..

listen to what some of the people here have to say.. althought a lot of them are somewhat cocky, they do know theyre stuff... your printing branded shirts, yet you havent established your brand,..... you made a mistake, and as peeps have said.. get your shit known for some slick designs/illustrations if your doing shirts, or learn how to use a sewing machine like i do.. i been making clothes for me and my friends for years, yet i wouldnt go out putting my name accross shirts..

you gotta do something special before someone is willing to rock something just because its got a brand name on it... and even that is a bit lame in my opinion.. i've never been into rocking shit with brand names accross the front, unless its a bit of an ironic dig..

but stil, we're not telling you to pack it in... you just gotta think harder before you can go out and launch some clothing lable.. its not exactly an easy thing to do.. sure you could sell a few shirts to your buddies... but fuck.. would you buy a shirt that just had my name accross the front of it? doubt it!

you ever heard of a brand called ERA?

the designs in the label, the first volcom t-shirts just said volcom across it, same with WE and Hurley......)(?

maybe its just not your cup of tea, oh and im working on more arty designs, remember the brand is, very, very new and ive just been too busy in school to speed things up in the design part

Uh, perhaps you're overlooking that WE has some sort of purpose.... skating.

Your clothing company doesn't seem to do anything but be a threadless ripoff. Heat transfers suck anyway... and the poses your guy has seem suspiciously similar to the way the guy poses in the WESC catalog.

I mean, what the hell do I know? I have my own clothing company as well and we tirelessly silkscreen the fuck out of ourselves by hand. I can't say my designs are better than yours but have some class, trick.

It seems pretty unbelievable that you'd plug and act like you don't know what you're doing. That 3rd or so post was obviously sarcasm and you can't exactly play the "innocent card" by saying you're new to this.

I'm not really into this quick bashing for no reason. It is obvious that there is little or no knowledge of marketing involved in this effort. If you want to be like Volcom or WE you should study what those brands did before starting and the initial launch of the company. You may have learned your first lesson that starting an account on a board and posting haphazardly about your new company is probably not the best tactic. WE didn't start out by making one tshirt design and creating a myspace account. They had some pretty major backing before the initial launch. Sponsored some desirable names in the prospected markets and built a brand while setting up booths at ASR and SIA. They are probably not a good case study to learn from if you are one person with an iron in your bedroom. Now Volcom on the other hand started out by maintaining a very underground presence and reaching out to friends that happened to be some of the hottest names in their sport. For the initial years they kept the product scarce and it was not visible other than the 'key' people wearing it. Due to budgets or not it worked. That in itself created a huge buzz about the brand. Supply and demand where the demand is far greater than the supply. In the last couple years Volcom has oversaturated the market and as far as I know alot of accounts on the west coast have dropped the brand. But I know this varies depending which part of the country you are in. Point being, learn about marketing, brand value and how to maximize that before you run around saying you have a company. If you want to start by making some shirts and giving them to friends to support you then do it, but don't assume alot of people are going to want to buy your stuff just because you did.

wow dont get me wrong, i dont call this a "brand" or "company" this for me is a concept project between a few friends, what you said is very very true. yes i do know about the backrounds of WE and Volcom from working within the british skate industry and vistiting various trade shows and have had alot of good feedback. but im not stupid.

we are only on myspace because that is where all my friends spend alot of their time, its not really for marketing.

I only put this thread up to get some comments, good and bad. I think i worded it wrong, well yeah i did, and i was a bit excited and trigger happy - sorry bout that.

but yeah im taking all this in.

thanks!

sorry i worded this thread wrong, mainly due to excitment and being trigger happy but i admit thats wrong. but no i dont consider this to be a "company" or "brand" its just a concept drawn together between a group of friends, which is a safe place to be.

i have studied WE and Volcom from being in the british skate scene and visiting various trade shows and talking to people, and response has been good.

im taking all this info in, doing something wrong the first time is a good thing. if i remember right back in 1998 WE came round some shops in the uk and the one i work in was one of them, they were flogging themselves as a tech snowboard brand, but people didnt like it so they changed thier game.

thanks for the advice

oh cmon now!

of course you think of it as a company and a brand, and if you don't you're a fool. there's nothing wrong with thinking of it in that way, but you have to accept that it's what you're doing.

here's the thing: you really need to stop comparing yourself to volcom and we, not only is it realllllllllllllly annoying, it's the wrong way to go about things.
