this is my, and i stress , my opinion :

gore tex is over-rated. what works for me is shit like the barbour jackets. parrafin wax soaked in egyptian cotton or whatever cotton. i have both a barbour and a filson jacket with the same set up and the shit works! gore tex, after a period of time, does not work. you have to maintain it constantly by treating the jacket. with the waxed cotton , you don't have to do this. the only drawback is that there is a funny smell from the oily wax.

Gore-tex is not overrated but it is overkill for most applications. There is a lot of waterproof breathable options on the market that do a great job for most people (city folk) but for real users in serious conditions nothing is better.

gor-tex XCR is probably the best waterproof technical fabric available.

the junya watanabe w/ gor-tex jackets are dope, but crazy expensive. oh well.

Barbour is nice, but they are the ones that have to be treated every season. I have an old one and when treated properly and maintained,is as waterproof as my Air Force Issue Gortex camo. My Barbour seems to breath well enough but for a warmer, wet climate I go for the Gortex every time. Gortex is much lighter even if it does not breath as well. I wore the Gortex during the Invasion of Panama in '89 and it is still in incredible condition, if not a little tighter around the midsection.
