Well, I saw the thread about bboy culture, and I was wonderin why no one started a topic about this either...

I'm from cali, and I'm sure a large amount of posters are from here as well. Anyone who gets into bboying or dancing in general is bound to come across these dances, so here are some videos that I really enjoy.

(I can't figure out to embed...so if anyone could help thatd be great!)

I'm studying popping. I'd post some footage but unfortunately it's over a year old, so it's really sloppy. Today was probably my first time I danced in public, just a little freestyle cypher thing at an after school event to promote the dance show for next week.

I really like botting, animation and speed control. I kind of need some advice for angles that I can do when dancing for an audience, because the style I tend to do is really subtle. Good thread, there was on in the trash but it def. doesn't belong there.

EDIT: lulz, my brother took a pic of me.. and obviously I'm not in a nice angle, I must have been in a transition or doing something with my hands..

Nice nice, where's Torrance? In norcal or socal? I practice a lot with ppl aroudn the Bay and LA, but I live in San Luis Obispo right now cuz I go to cal poly.

About footage, its the same with me. I've been dancing about 3 years now, but I only have videos from last winter.

Its not amazing, but heres some oldies:

MaydenChina(me) vs Slim Boogie: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=bO7hotgBjcY

Maydenchina vs Dfunk: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=tKenrkRKsD4

Me vs Mega Mike: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=8vp3e0hbkRE

I have some random pictures of me on WestCoastPoppin.com as well, but nothing nice enough to comment.

haha thanks, I've had a loooooot of practice and training.

I went down to LA twice(this year), both for Jsmooths jams, if you know who he is. I know a lot of the poppers in LA so i head down there all the time. I lost to pacman in a battle.....but it was clear to almost everyone there that I won, he even admitted it.

I'll put up new footage of myself once i get it, and ill add some more vids.

And everyone should feel free to add any vids they like if they want

Hey mayden, when you say you found a studio by you does that mean you learned choreo? Or do they have workshops for technique and stuff only? Or did you just go there for a kind of informal thing, where you meet other poppers that help you practice? I have a studio near my house (HYPE Torrance) but I'm not sure what I'm looking for.

Bionic is my homiiiieee.

By studio, i just looked up some dance studios in the area and tried to see if there was popping being taught. I found a place, and bionic taught there, but he stopped. I still checked it out and learned from suga pop's ex, and then met bionic at a competition he was judging and got to know him and start practicin.

I hate choreo...the only thing i call hip-hop is what you see elite force doing, ppl like stretch and link are real hip-hop dancers.

After you meet a few ppl, you get more connections and stuff, and then you start setting up sessions and practice spots.

go check out westcoastpoppin.com or mrwiggles.biz, im sure you can find ppl by you

Hey mayden, do you have any tips for dancing in public/battling? You seem to do very well in the circle, and this week will be my first time against other "dancers." I'm fairly confident that I'm technically better than any of them, but my technique won't matter if I look awkward, like I don't know what I'm doing in context of battling.

I'm trying out angles and combos that are wider/more noticeable for the whole crowd, but I'm practicing in limited space and I'm not sure how to utilize all of the dance floor. I notice you have crazy leggs, and I was wondering if you have any advice for simple moves for transportation or anything like that. I can glide and old man, but that's about it.

Anyone else, feel free to contribute. Thanks!

Hmm..

I think I do decent in battles, but I still need to work on stuff myself, but anyhow, the most important thing to remember is that your dancing. It might seem dumb and obvious, but really, some people forget and think to much about battling and winning.

Really try to find a feel to the music, and do what you do and enjoy it. If you can have fun while battling, it just doesnt make sense to do it.

Some other things to do are: Keep your head up (don't stare at your opponent, but its always good to maybe look at him right at the the climax of a beat or something. Keeping your head up is a sign of confidence and knowing what you are doin)

Move around the dance floor (IF you can glide, work it in, but dont just stop, glide somewhere, and start dancing. Its important to keep your flow and maintain the beat that you had earlier. Other good ways to get around are misdirections, like stepping one way, but then then ending up going the other way (IE: walkouts and other footwork. Small hops and other things work as well, so just play around with movements to you find what you like))

You'll probably be fine, but you really feel it when your battling since theres pressure from the judges and to please the crowd. Just keep a level head and do your thang!

(post up some footage too man! i wanna see how other people get down!)

Thanks for the tips, man. I'll try to get up some footage but it won't be anything spectacular. I've only practiced on and off for maybe a year, year and half.. but always by myself.

this is great advice.

LISTEN TO THE MUSIC. LISTEN TO MUSIC. LISTEN TO ALL THE PARTS OF THE MUSIC. a really great dancer and make you appreciate music on an entirely new level, maybe even emphasizing nuances that most people don't really listen for. that's why i love locking so much even though it gets very little love - locking is all about that - but it should be applied to all funk dances.

^ I definitely agree on that.. I love it when dancers hit super subtle nuances in the music with a move that visually represents it perfectly.. I think that might be why I like animation, botting, strobing, speed control and isos like that..

I'll definitely do that, but the thing is I don't know if my audience will be that aware of the music and might not pick up on the subtleties. Oh well. I love this thread.

Lia vs. Hojin. One of the dopest battles I've seen in a long time.

I have to agree with everything's that's been said above. The main reason I like funk style dances (mainly popping and locking) over breaking or (ha) krumping, is because funk styles emphasizes the beat. In breaking you don't necessarily have to, but the best moments in breaking are when the beats are hit creatively like Born and Machine try to do.

Also, I feel like only lately Koreans are being recognized in the popping world, even though they've been around for a really long time.

My .02. I didn't realize there were poppers here and I had no idea coldrice was into locking. Pretty cool.

Yea, I wasn't sure if there were poppers either, but I saw the bboy thread and decided to test the waters. LIa vs hojin, and actually any battle with hojin in it is pretty entertaining.

I have noticed the same thing as you though indesertum, but I think this is because only recently has Korea stepped it up with ppl like kmoon, poppin j, ds and some others. Before, it was just like popkun and kin and some other guys, at least they were all I really knew about.

I cant wait to find out about Juste Debout though....I wanna see JJ and Kmoon in the final vs Kidboogie and yuzuru hahahaha

or maybe acky and salah vs walid and Jr. boog.. thatd be nice too

i hope i get to see juste debout live at some point....

battles are probably good for experience - not that i've never done any.

yeah i weird that korean lockers (originality) blew up before their poppers did. i haven't seen enough korean poppers though - there was one famous guy everyone in china was crazy about... he did that commercial for some jeans or something? while i was out in korea, all the battles were fucking b-boy battles. it was like 20 b-boy battles to every 1 funkstyle battle - no joke.

Haha yea, originality was huge when they came up. Koreans had Nam hyun joon and i guess he led the way for everyone else.

I wanna go to juste debout next year, not to battle, just to be there since my sister might move out there. Its so dope..and you get to meet so many international heads. Thats why I loved goin to summit and HTWWW.

So does anyone else battle here, or what??

Really?

Ive always had good experiences with every kinda dancer, except krumpers...but ive never met them. I actually get annoyed at bboys sometimes...some of them dont have a very broad and accepting view of other dances....

Then again, I'm in cali, so theres a lot of poppers and everyone usually looks out for each other, i dunno how it is in other states.

I think the synch is off + i got the worst song ever

edit1: it looks a little fast now that i think about it, because i remember that boom came out of nowhere and i hesitated a little before sinking with it

edit2: nope, maybe i am just off. :'[

edit3: im starting to think im just off cuz there are some claps in that vid that i did hit, towards the end (one after a wave, one with my foot, and one with my back) so i wouldn't be surprised if nerves just got to me or something.
