Santa Monica Area Shows (music)

I know its a fairly general question but it kinda has to be at this point as Im not sure what is available in the area.

I have a good friend that just moved to the Santa Monica area and is looking for a few venues that might be having some good shows going on.

if I could get some help like names of clubs, what type of shows, maybe even a bit of a calander of events or just a few links that would be great.

I tried the search function but since its a pretty general question I wasnt really about to find much.

Does it have to be in SM itself? I mean, just up the road in Hollywood/West Hollywood there are a ton of clubs from the Troubadour to the Viper Room

Pickup an "L.A. Weekly" at any local record store for a complete list of venues and shows going on in l.a. For starters check out:

Troubador

Viper Room

Spaceland

The Echo

Echoplex

Cinespace

Silverlake Lounge

and you should probably go to Amoeba Music while you're at it
