I have $10,000USD. I wish to invest it. I'm really saving the money for college, but whatever. I want to keep some money for safety, but I'm interested in some kind of investment. What should I do? well basically, canadian laws are set up so that essentially no new bank can be started...FI's and stuff can still pop up, as well as foreign interests, but essentially everyone in canada uses one of 6 banks who have a hold on the market, and they're solid investments as they play out over the long term giving you solid return on your shares as a holder, and eventually (once again, over time) a chance to sell at quite a profit.
