I've been trying to figure out this problem for the past year or so but I've been utterly unsuccessful.

Problem: When I try to play PS2 on the TV, I get two black vertical stripes on both sides of the screen.

Setup:

I own a panasonic viera wide screen HDTV and a sony playstation 2.

I rarely watch TV and I bought it for gaming.

The game system is connected by component cables.

What I've tried:

I tried adjusting the aspect ratio control in the ps2 system setting menu and also on the TV. Plus, I've tried games like GTA that are supposedly wide-screen compatible.

Does this happen with every TV or is it just me?

I don't think I'm quite ready to move on to PS3 yet...

mad rep points to people who can show me a solution:)

Some games there's a menu in-game that lets you pick between normal (4:3) and wide screen (16:9). I think unless you set up it up right on your PS2 menu AND in the game, it won't be widescreen.

Your TV may natively have a resolution that is beyond TV widescreen and display black bars on the end to make the display a correct aspect ratio. The question is, even with the black bars is the image widescreen or is it normal 4:3? If the image is still widescreen with the black bars then you don't have much to worry. If you really don't like it then you should be able to stretch the image to fit the entire screen in the TV menu. However, if it is just a 4:3 resolution then...what happens exactly when you switch the TV's aspect ratio? Same with when you switch the PS2's?

This is what I see. I have a 32 inch.

The in-game widescreen mode is ON

I could change the TV's aspect ratio to stretch the image but some stuff gets cropped and I'm not a huge fan of that.
