Shopping for clothes for Interview in MUSIC industry in NYC

Hey all, hopefully someone could offer some good advice as I am a little lost :)

I have been managing to get some interviews set-up for intern positions in Music Licensing, A&R, and at small Indie Record Labels in NYC.

I have no clue what to wear or where to shop as I am very new to NYC and not that fashion smart. The typical response would be wear a suit but I really, really do not think its appropriate for the industry and type of job I am interviewing for.

I am thinking something like dress pants and collared shirt and dress shoes.

What stores should I check out that have slim and smaller sizes?

Especially some pants/slacks that fit skinny dudes? One trouble I am having is everywhere seems to have 30x32 as the smallest size for anything besides jeans. Even places like H&M and a few of the boutiques in Williamsburg I've checked out with very slim-cut 30x32's are still too big. I need a 29x32 at the biggest as I am actually around a 28 waist.

If it helps I am 5'10.5, around 133 lb's, and 35.5 in chest.

Oh, and some shoes recommendations would be great too!

If you seriously have no idea of what to wear, just wear a slim suit (to keep it fashionable) with slim tie. Just make sure it looks sort of cool (in a Paul Smith Collection way, not in an Armani Exchange kind of way) That way, you'll be covered if you are supposed to be in a suit, but you'll still have a cool vibe going.

If you're skinny as hell, have you tried J. Lindeberg?

with interviewing for design jobs i found that places were all over the place in formailty. music seems like itd be the same way. if its a larger place, i wouldn't sweat it and just call up and ask the receptionist how the dress is around there. most of the time you wouldn't even have to bring up who you are.

other times, i'll just ask. its not a huge deal unless you show up dressed to the 9's while everyone's in shorts or vice versa. (not that you should EVER wear shorts to an interview)

haha, I went shopping today and I still need pants ASAP! I tried Barneys (awesome salesman was helping me for two hours searching the whole store), Bloomingdales, H&M, Express, Scoop, Pop, Built By Wendy, Oak, and a few other places.

I did find a few items that almost made the cut. Helmut Lang fit awesome but were too flashy w/ werid details, and MIU MIU were almost perfect except the smallest size Barney's had were 1.5 sizes too big.

Also, I got a phone call today from a place I interviewed for last week... I start tomorrow and its a paid position so no more interviews :)

Thanks for the suggestions, please keep them coming.

Black jeans would be great too and I really liked the cotton twill type jeans Built By Wendy had but their 30x32 are still really big on me and they actually are kind of boot cut.

Oh god. I guess it's true what they say about A&R people and the music industry.

First of all, who's your A&R?

A mountain climber who plays an electric guitar

but he don't know the meaning of dope

when he's looking for a suit-and-tie rap

that's cleaner than a bar of soap

If you couldn't find one pair of pants at Barneys and Bloomingdales there is no hope. You may as well cut your legs off.

hah, well I could've but I didnt feel like dropping $300 on a pair or slacks that need major tailoring and I'd probably only wear once (for an interview I am now not going to) also. Anyways I am good now, I just picked up some black jeans which is all I'll probably need.
