I stopped on Final Fantasy IX, it was the last unique FF as far as I'm concerned...

FFXII was the all chick one right?

I thought FFX was pretty decent. And nah, FFXII is not the all chick one, that's the newest FF that came out a couple months ago.

You're thinking of FFX-2, which is a spin off of FFX's plot.

Was I the only one who thought that FFXII was really not good? The plot was just barely there.

Oh man there have been way too many Final Fantasys. :o

I know which one XII is now, I think...

Yeah, one of my roommates mixes them all up, like FFXII and FFX-2 is reasonable because the name is almost the same, but my roommate's mixes up games that aren't even close to one another in the series, and it really irritates me.

I'm not even a huge fan of the FF series, and I know which ones are which, and he plays more games than me too.

1. final fantasy tactics <-- best fucking game ever. before i knew about emulators and burning and crap i picked up a copy on ebay for like $70 -_-. still, worth every penny.

2. chronotrigger <-- did anyone else love the carnival/fair sequence at the beginning? i swear i played all the minigames and got like 300 something cats.

3. fallout 1/2 - what other rpg can you be a porn star?

4. baldurs gate 2 + expansions - cheers for being a god, but never actually finished this game

5. planescape torment - gameplay was easy, but the characters were killer. sell your annoying party members to slavers? oh yes please!

What the hell was that one RPG for the N64? You were like a kid or something and you could use magic. I feel like the first big deal was like a bandit in the woods.

i havent played XII but its in the same world(ivalice) as FFT. very rare for square to do that since they always change worlds on every single final fantasy.

maybe u'll like shadowrun for snes?

Yeah, Shadowrun has a really good setting. I'm sure if you like futuristic cyber punk settings you'll take a liking to that, I'd also suggest the Phantasy Star games if you haven't played them yet. They've got a good mix of futuristic stuff in 'em.

I think we need a sufu gaming session. Stay up a couple days straight, bang out a few classic games.

Stupid purple octopus monster...ugh.

shit. if i remember correctly i had the genji glove and offering and raped him hardcore. i think i was crazy enough to max out my favorite characters to level 99 and destroyed kefka like it was no thang. that mimicker gogo was quite useful and gau was useless. i fuckin thought that zozo? tower was the hardest when you only had to use magic.

Yeah... shit this was back in the day where plot actually mattered--I'd put my characters in Inns over and over to see all of Shadow's dreams. Or I'd try to figure out if Zozo was really Darryl, Edgar's lover who had the other ship. Or, crazy enough, Zozo was really his son, who never met him since she could have survived the crash and had been carrying his baby. Then he grows up in the zone eater, never knowing Edgar was his father...

Yeah this on some soap opera level shit snitch. Love it.

The carvinal scene in CT was definitely fun. I loved trying to predict the race for some reason. THAT OLD FUCKING MAN WAS A LIAR!. His picks were hardly ever accurate.

I agree with FFVI being really great with the depression era feel in the world of ruin. I remember replaying the game one of the many times, and i accidentally didn't save Cid with the right fish and then Celes fucking tried to kill herself!!! I was freaking out. The characters' emotional problems were pretty real and relatable. Terra was pretty fucked up, but i thought it was cool she finally found someone to love her and need her in those kids.

I never got to see all of shadow's dreams. I think i saw all but 1 or 2.

Vanish + doom/xzone anyone? I felt really bad doing that as a little kid looking back on it.

Anyone play Illusion of Gaia? Kind of a cross between Zelda and Secret of Mana. I thought it was a really good game. Entertaining through and through with a solid story, good action, and very entertaining. You guys should definitely ROM it as i think it sells for a decent amount on ebay. One of my favorite snes rpgs of all time. Has a fun egyptian/english/mayan history aspect to it.

Uh oh. Hope everyone's ready for Seiken Densetsu 4. If you don't speak nerd it's the 4th game in the Secret of Mana series. None of the crap that has come out lately with "Mana" on it that were nothing like the originals. SD3 was really good on ROM and this is supposed to be a prequel to everything, follow the same gameplay and story, plus it's going to be 3d.

i did the exact same thing! to get shadow's dreams. shadow was one of my strongest characters. man, final fantasy vi was pretty deep. speaking of soap opera level. i remember the opera house when celes was singing and i think locke played a part in it as well. the music was pretty dope on that part. i think your homie the purple octo appears in it.

i'm upset that general guy with all the lightning sword powers in ffiii/vi died. you get to use him once in a battle too, he was so bad ass. i think his name was leo. and then i played fft and they let us use orlandu and i thought like fuck, they're gonna let us use him and he's just gonna die. but nooo, orlandu ! YES. he's easily the most bad ass character in fft. and getting cloud in that game was useless.

secret of mana was my shit. it got kinda annoying though in battles were you could just pause stuff, i didn't like the dwarf much. i also loved seiken densetsu 3. never got to play 2?

to be honest, i don't think i completely understood any RPG's plot. like i have glaring holes, i mean i could give you the general idea but i still can't tell you what happene din CC, CT, FFII, FFIII/VI, FFV, FFVII, FFVIII, and FFT...

and, is it just me or was FFV just like the base for every Final Fantasy game?

and wouldn't FFX be better off as just a movie?

Seiken D 2 was just secret of mana. 1 was also known as Final Fantasy Adventures for gameboy. 3 was the game that never came out that most people Rom'd and 4 comes out in a few months.

I have 2 really good cds of final fantasy III/VI music. One of them is just piano versions, the other is a full orchestra. I listen to it on my ipod as i walk around campus to give everything a more dramatic feel. I used to have that opera song memorized. That game had by far my favorite music of any game i've ever played.

Ok derailing moment: this is the best fucking thread ever. Carry on.

There were hella glitches for FFVI too... like using the sketch technique and getting a shitload of ribbons and ummm fuck I forgot the ring that gave you MP reduction...so I'd put two of them on Terra and her spells would only be like 10MP tops for the highest spell. Get it from the Brontasaurus in that patch of green at the end where you can roam and do whatever. Ooooo or the curse ring/shield you gotta equip for 255 battles before it turns into the hero ring/shield etc.

Secret of Mana was dope... I beat it once, but the rest of the time I always plough through the first half and forget to finish it--the whole silent protagonist boy with no name always seemed funny to me.

Tales of Phantasia also had some crazy graphics, although it was more of an action/rpg with its 2-D fight system that involved real-time movement.

Another random note... I loved to play the overworld theme music in Crono's home village on the piano. Used to have it as my ringtone back in my candybar Nokia days (with the changable faceplates)...

best thread on sufu currently

i think i love FF6 music more than most other music ive heard in my life, I feel like i'm deeply attached to the old FF soundtracks on a personal level. I actually listened to "Terra" (the main wandering on the world map song in FF6) when i was driving to take my SAT's in 1999 because it made me feel like i was on a fucking mission. haha anyway, those piano collections were nice too, i think i have them for FF4, 6 , 7, and 8... Nobuo Uematsu is a musical genius.

thats what i loved the most about FF6, all those secret side quests that revealed little bits about the characters and their pasts. the game was much more than simply the plot, it went deep into the characters using the story-within-the-story storytelling method, along with all the possible rumors to wonder about, it all made the whole game more engaging. FF6 > FF7, in my book.

There were hella glitches for FFVI too... like using the sketch technique and getting a shitload of ribbons and ummm fuck I forgot the ring that gave you MP reduction...so I'd put two of them on Terra and her spells would only be like 10MP tops for the highest spell. and when Relm paints Gau when he re-appears on the Veldt and get 99 Economizers, Offerings, Genji Gloves, Gem Boxes, and tintin-abars.

Was I the only one who thought that FFXII was really not good? The plot was just barely there.

I agree with FF12 being very average, i played like 20 hours and the plot didnt hook me yet at all. I just like Fran, and her accent.

It's cause they are jumping on the classic Final Fantasy steez of yesteryear.

Something about that great depression era of FFIII really got me in that mood. I empathized for the characters and the confusion they experienced as they rallied together to rebel.

same here, the depression era was so desolate and everyone was seperated, thats why felt so good to find all your characters again one by one, find that preserved airship, regroup the team- and the feeling of hope starts to snowball. and then we would start to see little bits of the characters' own story, how they were all letting go of something they lost, but not letting go of the hope to change the future and we realize why we cant give up. thats when we get fucking buff, find some new characters, cheat, and then go punk the shit out of Kafka.

anyone play any Gamecube RPGs? i dont think they came out with that many, but i played Tales of Symphonia for a while, it was fun while it lasted, but like with any rpg, once you stop playing, its kind of hard to get back into it. too bad i dont have as much time for video games anymore, now i find it pretty hard to completely finish a RPG the way i used to in the SNES days.

final fantasy vii - sephiroth theme music orchestra is crack. but yea, final fantasy iii was amazing in every aspect. i always wanted them to remake it in 3D. the ps version with the cgi cutscenes were crazy. they characters all looked so good in 3D and it gave them so much more life-- i want to get the nintendo ds version but i dont have a nintendo ds. poop.

oh yea, no one mention wild arms + thousand arms.

and -- xenosaga was bad. all of them.

FF12 wasn't horrible and the story had promise, but they just botched it. I beat the game and did most of the secret quests (about 95 hours), and the last 5% of the story just rushed everything at you at once. It was crazy. I mean, if they worked more on the pacing and preplanning of the story it could've been good, but it seems like they just failed hardcore at something that was a bit too grand for them to make personal. The sidequests weren't that fun either. I guess if you're really into the way MMORPGs do their sidequests you'll like em' but it was just alright. It was certainly entertaining and the new battle system was nice for level building and tearing through dungeons, but it lacked soul. I don't know, i'm not a huge fan with how the series has been going lately.

At least Dragon Quest is staying true to RPG fans and they've been around just as long as FF(i think a bit longer). The only thing with DQ games are that the story isn't as crazy and dramatic as the FF series, but then again, they're not meant to be so it's not a knock on the DQ series. It's always been about gameplay and a overall classic RPG feeling. Dragon Quest VIII was fantastic and most definitely worth a play if you guys have the time (it was long 60-90 hours) and the game is certainly a grinding game. You can't get away equipping a moogle charm, vanish-dooming people until the end. Things cost a shit load of money and you have to fight for money and experience pretty often. The game makes it totally worth it. I personally loved the story too.

Yeah, I played Tales of Symphonia too. It was hard for me to pick up that game, had to go to a couple stores when it came out to find it. I really liked the battle system in it, was espcially fun when one of my friends would come over and we'd do the battles with two people.

I also played Fire Emblem, which was a good game, I like the battle system in it, I just don't like the fact that when you lose a character they're gone for good, it makes it challenging but some times it was just too frustrating.

It wasn't a gamecube only game, but i played Skies of Arcadia. I was very dissapointed after all the hype i heard about it when it was on dreamcast. It was alright, but i didn't really like the battle system, the characters or much of the story. Meh

Damn, at one point at almost bought that game. Not sure why I decided against it, I remember watching my friend playing it for DC and raving about it too. Guess I made the right decision by leaving that one on the shelf.

But one RPG that has caught my eye recently is Eternal Sonata, coming out for the 360. Has anyone seen the screenshots or video for this game? The battle system looks similar to Tales of Symphonia, and the environments and characters look really detailed, I'm not sure what the plot's like though, I'll have to read up on that.

I see a lot of people here dislike FF12. It's hard to get into because it's a lot different from previous FFs but I enjoyed it. I was skeptical when first playing it as well but it gets better. The side quests can get ridiculous too, only crazy people like me would do them. (50 million HP boss that can kill your whole party in 1 move, it takes about 4 hours to beat him on average)

I see no one here mentioned Star Ocean II except for me. It's one of the best RPGs I've ever played. It wasn't really popular when it came out because there was no fanbase. It was by Enix back in the day for PSX. I was so excited for the 3rd installment for the PS2 but it was horrible, I was so disappointed. Very similar to how I felt about Chrono Trigger/Chrono Cross. Star Ocean II's story/battle system was amazing. If you ever get a chance to try this, I really recommend it.

ive been playing ff12 on and off since it came out

currently on my way to draklor

and i have played the oldschools and the midschools and some of the new schools

but i really enjoy it for how much it has deviated from the originals

every time i dont have a random battle i shit myself with love juice

which is quite often if not all the time.

and the music is good enough for me not to just put flamin lips on repeat and the game on mute.

the story line is alright enjoyable.

i enjoy it for what it is

no what its grandfather was that it isnt.
