"fly like a butterfly, sting like a bee"

one of tyson's best words IMO.

Gollee he's great.

Are you serious? "Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee" was a quote from the great Muhammad Ali.

"Float like a butterfly.

Sting like a bee.

Your hands can't hit

what your eyes can't see."

Muhammad Ali

in japan, he is revered as one of the greatest brawlers of our generation.

you can go to dvd shops and they still sell dvd boxed sets of all his fights.

in the japanese version of street fighter II, the boxer character is named "m. bison". in the u.s. version, they had to switch the names around for obvious reasons. that technique that he does where he turns his back is a great move that the real mike tyson would do. he would turn and give you his shoulder, once he felt the glove hit, he would unleash a titanic right hand. the opponents glove would betray his owner's distance and put him in a very bad place indeed.

his love of pigeons was delighted in by the japanese. in tokyo, he entertained onlookers by chasing and catching pigeons in the streets.

he is treated like royalty in japan, as he should be.

wow miz you need to do a write up on tyson on your blog. never had any idea of this.

Also i was at work today and a teacher put on a video of life in japan. i think it ws older but interesting. It talked about how children go to school for so many hours and try to get to tokyo university. It also talked about a group of japanese people who live in the "ghetto" parts of Osaka and make a living in leather products. I could only then imagine them making my samurai belts im about to order from there.

japan has changed a lot, young lion. what you saw was japan during the "bubble". things were great, society was obedient, a life of moderate luxury was guaranteed.

now, there is a huge population of disallusioned youth. they saw their fathers go broke and lose their jobs during the recession. the result? incredible fashion, fighters and art.

there are ghettos in osaka, there are ghettos in tokyo, there are ghettos in okinawa. you just don't see it beyond the glare of the glitz.

in japan, the idea of the "shokunin" still prevails. a "shokunin" is an artisan--someone who does one thing and does it to the best of his or her ability. the japanese denim and leather experts are modern shokunin of the highest order.

i would write this stuff on my blog, but it's just easier to post it on here. what do you think?

For you Tyson Fans:

(04-13) 11:34 PDT MUMBAI, India (AP) --

A diamond heist, a Bollywood dance routine and Mike Tyson make an unlikely combination.

But the former heavyweight boxing champion is set to groove to Indian pop music in a promotional video for "Fool and Final," an upcoming Bollywood comedy, the film's media consultant said Friday.

Tyson, 40, will shoot the promo in India, said N. Chattani, who is in charge of publicity for the movie's producer, Firoze Nadiadwala.

"It's finalized," Chattani said. "Tyson will be shooting the music promo with the entire cast."

Why Tyson? Aside from instant publicity, action hero Sunny Deol stars as a boxer in the film, directed by Ahmed Khan.

"The movie is a laugh riot, and the filmmakers thought Tyson would be great in the promo," Chattani said.

In 1986, a 20-year-old Tyson became the youngest heavyweight boxing champion in history. He was convicted of rape in Indiana in 1992 and pleaded no contest to misdemeanor assault charges in Maryland in 1999.

By 1997, Tyson's career hit a low point when he bit Evander Holyfield's ear during a fight.

i just love this fucking thread.

0717_mike_tyson_flynet.jpg

from TMZ....

Ear-snackin' Iron Mike Tyson looks like he's getting into shape -- pear shape!

Mike, who once said, "I guess I'm gonna fade into Bolivian," [sic] now looks like that won't happen.

The former champ was spotted pounding the pavement in Beverly Hills ... which probably means that a reality show is just around the corner.

I feel like this video is mocking and exploitative, but whatever...

I'd definitely cal Tyson an organic intellectual. He's got some smart quotes about his critical consciousness of white people making bank off of his savagery, etc., and how depictions of him relied on and furthered old stereotypes of black men (like in the video when he mocks the depictions, saying "I'm a big strong n***** that knocks out people and rapes people"). He knew he was being used for largely white people's enjoyment, and both reveled in and reviled the spectacle he was implicated in.

BTW, the Temple Effectives shirt was OK, but the No Mas stuff was really nuanced. Everyone should check it out, especially the pieces with the pigeons.

[To a female reporter] "It's no doubt I am going to win this fight and I feel confident about winning this fight. I normally don't do interviews with women unless I fornicate with them. So you shouldn't talk anymore... Unless you want to, you know."

This is one of my most recent paintings, sized at 40" x 52" I imagined a grandiose portrait

found above the fireplace in the hypothetical study of Tyson's now repossessed

manor.

Does Tyson really have those tattoos? they don't look familiar..

Would you trade this painting for any pair of jeans at Self Edge?
