football: the beautiful game

I mean, not really. I don't think anyone was pinning their hopes on a Pompey upset.

You still have to play Arsenal, Spurs, and the hate match against City (you know, the team all the actual Mancunians support?). United's got the upper hand, I'll give you that. Everyone else is just hoping for them to fuck up.

But hopes weren't crushed today. If they were crushed at all, it was by Arshavin on crack yesterday, not by United's lukewarm performance against an obviously inferior team.

one penalty didn't cost tottenham the game. the 4 afterwards did.

i really hope we end up signing tevez. berbatov, rooney, tevez, and ronaldo were unstoppable. i don't recall a time when all 4 were on the pitch at the same time.

Webb is usually one of the most competent and impartial referees in all of English football. This was a poor decision, and it had an unfortunate outcome for spurs, but the ref called what he saw. It would have been a difficult angle for him to see whether or not the goalkeeper got to the football first.

anyway, here for your enjoyment, one of the most ridiculous goals I've ever seen:

Impressions from Camp Nou at halftime:

Excellent play by Barca at the midfield, almost all passes hit their mark. Lots of ingenuity and typical Catalan football caviar. Chelsea is reduced to hoping for Marquez to fuck up and praying that Drogba will be there.

The real problem for Barcelona is that there's no end product. Finishing is ridiculously poor and you have to give Chelsea some credit for that. Berlin wall in the back, good pressure by Chelsea high up, disruption has been quite effective; lots of potentially costly fouls as this game plays on, though. The referee must have about half the Chelsea squad on his radar right now and I could envision plenty of yellows being produced second half if this carries on.

The power clearly being brought by Barca, but they need to think up some answers in the locker room right now, or we could see the game being decided by a defensive screw up and a lucky shot for Chelsea.

while i hate chelsea, i'm glad to see an english club keep barcelona at bay at camp nou. i'm tired of everybody giving barcelona the reach around and pretending their an invincible team. nothing would please me more than for united to beat chelsea in the final for a second year in a row.

Barcelona fans quite clearly disappointed there at full time. Whistles and boos everywhere. Not surprising, as Barca was in the driver's seat the entire game.

Some spectacular chances at the end there. Lack of routine for Bojan could have been the deciding factor that kept Barcelona goalless - that header lacked any direction. On a flawless ball like that, should have been an easy put. Still, that being said, Bojan was a real vitamin injection in the last minutes and I'd be surprised if he doesn't see some more playtime at Stamford Bridge.

To me watching at home, it seemed like Ballack should have received that second yellow on that situation right outside the box. I know it's the CL, but that was ugly.

Very physical, solid defending by Chelsea. Hiddink should be pretty pleased with this result to be honest.

Oh well, at least that paella was delicious.

barca had them on the ropes in the first half. chelsea were giving them all the time and room. it just looked silly. they were passing freely in front of the chelsea box but tried to shoot from distance instead of putting a through ball. hiddink saw that and corrected at half. they were pressing and barca can't play well when they don't have time on the ball. every other pass went to chelsea player. still cech motm.

still cech motm.

don't know about that. off position a lot, lots of trouble with the crosses, especially in the first half.

even though he didn't get a good finish off, drogba did some excellent work. running like a madman the entire game and pushing hard, even though he got some hard knocks. he'll take my nomination for chelsea.

i don't. he's going to ref a game in championship this weekend. not really a punishment since it's between top two teams, but i think if refs fuck up they should be sent down for few weeks. he wasn't at his best during lfc-arsenal game as well. he missed calls both ways. fuck the bald headed fuck, he also robbed the polish team at euros.

only way chelsea are going to score is if barca keep making mistakes in the back like Marquez did but i find that highly unlikely considering he wont be playing next game. and im sure even though the return leg is at the bridge, pool was able to put up 4 against them, and even though im a pool fan...i dont believe they are anywhere near barca on an attacking level. barca seemed just a step off when they had chances but i dont think chelsea will be able to duplicate this performance and i hope they don because it was kinda boring considering all they did was sit back and defend and hope they catch a break.

on another note, hopefully the absence of marquez levels the playing field a little bit for this sun even though hes no where near the level pepe is as a defender. i still cant believe he did what he did especially the game before the clasico and now were gonna be even more shorthanded, no sneijder and heinze and robben are probable. hopefully we can find a way to win
