Has anyone ever found something of value at an NYC thrift shop? I was under the impression that the Vintage Shop people scouted them every morning and picked up the good stuff to resell it.

^That has been my experience. I probably don't know where the good stuff is, but half the battle is finding items in my size.

yeah, in my experience, this is tough. everything seems to be picked over before it even hits the racks in some cases. I used to have good luck at Beacon's in Williamsburg and Park Slope, but i haven't seen anything consistently good in those places in a couple years.

My hidden gem USED to be the Salvation Army in Soho. anyone remeber this? It was a small storefront with a bigger basement level on spring btwn crosby and lafeyette and i'm not sure if it was because of the neighborhood (ie getting higher end hand-me-downs) but i could always find Ralph Lauren suits and jackets, decent vintage dress shoes, etc in a variety of sizes... sadly it closed about a year and a half ago.

Salvation army in Chelsea was decent, too. (closed as well, i believe).

beacon's closet is still pretty good. but i hate how thrift junk is picked up and then shows up in flying a for tenfold the cost.

yeah, i always find that hilarious. i work near flying a and can never believe the crap i see in the window when walking by to the c train. and somehow that place is always packed...

just echoing what everyone else said. I find Beacon's men's racks to be pretty tired. Sadly, if you want to find the nicer pieces, you'll probably have to resign yourself to paying vintage store prices.

tip: beacons closet is better in the middle of the week.
